The 1977 America's Cup was held in September 1977 at Newport, Rhode Island. [1] The US defender, Courageous , skippered by Ted Turner, defeated the Australian challenger, Australia , skippered by Noel Robins, in a four-race sweep. [2] Courageous' greatest winning margin out of all four races was 2 minutes and 23 seconds. [2] It was the second unsuccessful challenge by Alan Bond. [3]

Courageous had beaten Lowell North's Enterprise and Ted Hood's Independence to become the defender. Australia had beaten France , Gretel II and Sverige to become the challenger. [4]

This was Ted Turner's second try at a Cup, losing out at the defender trials at the 1974 Cup. [5] His crew included tactician Gary Jobson. [6] Enterprise had included Malin Burnham, Halsey Herreshoff and John Marshall. [4]

Courageous is a 12-metre class racing yacht. It was the third boat to win the America's Cup twice, in 1974 and 1977, after Columbia in 1899 and 1901, and Intrepid in 1967 and 1970. All three yachts were fielded by the New York Yacht Club. The Olin J. Stephens-designed sloop was the first all aluminum-hulled 12-metre class yacht.

The 2007 Louis Vuitton Cup held in Valencia, Spain, from April 16 to June 6 was the event used to select the challenger for the 2007 America's Cup. Eleven potential challengers competed in the competition which consisted of two round robins, two semi-finals and a final. The winner was Emirates Team New Zealand, who challenged the defender Alinghi in June 2007 for the America's Cup.

New Zealand "Kiwi Magic" was the America's Cup challenge boat sailed by Chris Dickson in the Louis Vuitton Cup Challenger series held in Gage Roads off Fremantle, Australia during the summer months of 1986 through 1987. She was New Zealand's first America's Cup entry and was the premier boat in the New Zealand Challenge syndicate.

The 1983 America's Cup was a 12-metre class yacht race which pitted the defending New York Yacht Club's Liberty against the Royal Perth Yacht Club's challenger, Australia II. The September 1983 match race was won by Australia II in the first successful challenge of the New York Yacht Club's 132-year defense of the Cup. The Australian syndicate's boat, skippered by John Bertrand, fought back from a 3–1 deficit to best the Dennis Conner-helmed defender, ending both the longest winning streak in sporting history and U.S. domination of the racing series.

The 1987 America's Cup was the twenty-sixth challenge for the America's Cup.

The 1987 Defender Selection Series was raced between four syndicates competing for the right to represent the Royal Perth Yacht Club as the defender of the America's Cup. Kookaburra III won the series and advanced to the 1987 America's Cup. However, they failed to defend the cup from the challenge of Stars & Stripes 87.

1980 Americas Cup

The 1980 America's Cup was held in September 1980 at Newport, Rhode Island. The US defender, Freedom, skippered by Dennis Conner, defeated the Australian challenger, Australia, skippered by James Hardy, four races to one. This was the last successful defense of the cup by the New York Yacht Club and the last defender designed by the naval architectural firm Sparkman & Stephens. It was the sixth unsuccessful challenge by Australia and the third by Alan Bond.

Noel Robins Australian sailor

David Noel Robins, OAM was an Australian sailor. He began sailing as a child, and became partially quadriplegic after receiving a spinal fracture from a car crash at the age of 21. He was the skipper of Australia in the 1977 America's Cup, won the 1981 Admiral's Cup, and won a gold medal in sailing at the 2000 Sydney Paralympics. He died on 22 May 2003, four weeks after being struck by a car.

Gretel II (KA-3) is an International 12-metre class racing yacht built for the America's Cup challenge series in 1970. She was designed by Alan Payne and built by W.H. Barnett for Australian media tycoon Sir Frank Packer.
