The Big Sky Conference (BSC) is a collegiate athletic conference affiliated with the NCAA's Division I with football competing in the Football Championship Subdivision. Member institutions are located in the western United States in the eight states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. Four affiliate members each participate in one sport: two from California are football–only participants and two from the Northeast participate only in men's golf.

The university has been a member of the Big Sky Conference since 1996. The Big Sky Conference women's basketball tournament is held at the end of each women's college basketball regular season. The tournament was first conducted by the Big Sky Conference at the end of the 1988–89 season, the first in which the conference sponsored women's sports. The Big Sky includes in its history the preceding six years of the Mountain West Athletic Conference, a women's athletic league consisting mostly of Big Sky members that operated from 1982 to 1988, so the inaugural tournament was in March 1983.. The tournament winner receives the Big Sky's automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.

The 2016 Big Sky Conference women's basketball tournament was a tournament from March 7-12, 2016. This was the first year in which all Big Sky members competed in the conference tournament. All 12 teams met at the Reno Events Center for the right to advance to the 2016 NCAA tournament. The arena seats roughly 5,000. Idaho defeated Idaho State to win their 2nd Big Sky tournament title for the first time since 1985 before returning to the Big Sky in 2014 and earn an automatic trip to the NCAA women's tournament.

The 2016–17 Weber State Wildcats men's basketball team represented Weber State University during the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Wildcats were led by 11th-year head coach Randy Rahe and played their home games in the Dee Events Center in Ogden, Utah as members of the Big Sky Conference. They finished the season 20–14, 12–6 in Big Sky play to finish in a tie for third place. As the No. 3 seed in the Big Sky tournament, they defeated Southern Utah and Eastern Washington before losing in the championship game to North Dakota. They were invited to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament where they defeated Cal State Fullerton in the first round to win the Riley Wallace Classic. In the second round, they lost to Texas A&M–Corpus Christi.

Shantay Andrade Legans is an American college basketball coach who is currently men's basketball head coach at Portland. Legans grew up in Goleta, California and played college basketball at California and Fresno State. He briefly played professional basketball in the Netherlands before beginning a coaching career.

They finished the season 5–27, 2–18 in Big Sky play to finish in last place. They lost in the first round of the Big Sky tournament to Montana State.

The 2019 Big Sky Conference women's basketball tournament was a postseason tournament that was held from March 11–15, 2019 at CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho. Portland State was the winner of the Big Sky tournament earns an automatic bid to the 2019 NCAA tournament.
