The 2017 Maryland Terrapins men's soccer team represented the University of Maryland, College Park during the 2017 NCAA Division I men's soccer season. It was the 72nd season of the university fielding a program. The Terrapins were led by 25th year head coach, Sasho Cirovski.

Contents

The season took a downturn towards the end as the Terrapins, then-ranked third in the nation went on a five match losing streak, that saw them fall out of the national rankings, and suffer a quarterfinal-bounce from the 2017 Big Ten Conference Men's Soccer Tournament. Nevertheless, the Terrapins qualified via an at-large for the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament for the 17th consecutive season. In their sole NCAA Tournament match this season, the Terps hosted Albany, where they lost in penalties.

Background

During the 2016 regular season, Maryland finished as the winners of the regular season as well as the Big Ten Tournament. [1] [2] However, the team lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to Providence. [3]

The Maryland Terrapins, commonly referred to as the Terps, consist of 19 men's and women's varsity intercollegiate athletic teams that represent the University of Maryland, College Park in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I competition. The 2014–15 Maryland Terrapins women's basketball team represented the University of Maryland, College Park in 2014–15 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. They are led by thirteenth year head coach Brenda Frese and played their home games at the Xfinity Center. They were first year members of the Big Ten Conference after 38 seasons playing in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The 2014-15 Lady Terrapins won the 2014-15 Big Ten regular season Championship and the 2015 Big Ten Conference women's basketball tournament in their first year as a member of the Big Ten. They were the third women's basketball program in the Big Ten to go undefeated in the conference. The 1984-85 Ohio State Buckeyes and the 1998-99 Purdue Boilermakers were the only other women's programs in the Big Ten to accomplish that feat. They finished the season 26–8, 12–4 in Big Ten play to finish in second place. They defeated Indiana and Nebraska to advance to the championship of the Big Ten women's tournament where they lost Ohio State. They received an at-large to the NCAA women's basketball tournament as the No. 5 seed in the Kansas City region. There they defeated Princeton before losing to NC State in the Second Round.

The Maryland–Virginia lacrosse rivalry is an intercollegiate lacrosse rivalry between the Virginia Cavaliers and Maryland Terrapins. The teams first met in 1926 and have met 96 times, the second-most for UVA and third-most for UMD against any opponent. The two are some of the most historically successful intercollegiate programs, combining for twenty-one national titles, ten of which have come in the NCAA era. The Cavaliers and Terrapins were league foes in the Atlantic Coast Conference from 1954 to 2014, before Maryland joined the Big Ten the following year. The teams ceased their annual matchup until a meeting five years later in the 2019 NCAA Lacrosse Championship, won by Virginia on the way to their sixth NCAA championship.
