In addition to crowning the Pan American champions, the tournament also served as a qualifying tournament for the Youth World Championship. It acted as American qualifying tournament for the 2017 World Women's Handball Championship. The event was originally set to be held in Toronto, Canada but the Canadian Handball Federation withdrew, citing lack of funds.

The Pan American Youth Beach Handball Championship was the official competition for men's and women's youth national beach handball teams of America. In addition to crowning the Pan American champions, the tournament also served as a qualifying tournament for the IHF Youth Beach Handball World Championship. Only two were held as in 2018, the PATHF disbanded and the tournaments were replaced with the North America & the Caribbean and South & Central American championships.

The 2017 Pan American Men's Junior Handball Championship the XII edition of this tournament took place in Asunción, Paraguay from 20 to 25 March 2017. It acts as a qualifying tournament for the 2017 Men's Junior World Handball Championship.

The 2017 NorCA Women's Handball Championship was the second edition of the Nor.Ca. Women's Handball Championship. The tournament took place in Río Grande, Puerto Rico from 30 March to 3 April. It acts as the North American and Caribbean qualifying tournament for the 2017 Pan American Women's Handball Championship.
