Elise Mertens is a Belgian professional tennis player. She became world No. 1 in doubles in May 2021, the third Belgian to hold the top ranking in either singles or doubles after Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin. Mertens is a three-time Grand Slam champion in doubles, having won the 2019 US Open and 2021 Australian Open partnering Aryna Sabalenka, and the 2021 Wimbledon Championships with Hsieh Su-wei. Mertens also finished runner-up at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships with Zhang Shuai. Mertens has won 16 doubles titles on the WTA Tour, including the 2022 WTA Finals with Veronika Kudermetova, four at WTA 1000 level, and finished runner-up at the 2021 WTA Finals alongside Hsieh.

Hsieh Su-wei and Wang Xinyu defeated Leylah Fernandez and Taylor Townsend in the final, 1–6, 7–6(7–5), 6–1 to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2023 French Open. Hsieh Su-wei and Barbora Strýcová defeated Storm Hunter and Elise Mertens in the final, 7–5, 6–4 to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships. It was Hsieh's fourth Wimbledon women's doubles title and Strýcová's second, with the pair having teamed up previously to win the title in 2019.
Mate Pavić and Lyudmyla Kichenok defeated Joran Vliegen and Xu Yifan in the final, 6–4, 6–7(9–11), 6–3 to win the mixed doubles tennis title at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships. Kichenok won her first major title and became the first Ukrainian champion in Wimbledon history. Pavić won his third mixed doubles major title. Both teams saved match points en route to the final: Pavić and Kichenok saved one in their second-round match against Nikola Mektić and Bernarda Pera, and Vliegen and Xu saved three in the first round against two-time defending champions Neal Skupski and Desirae Krawczyk.
Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara defeated Desirae Krawczyk and Demi Schuurs in the final, 6–4, 4–6, [13–11] to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2023 Canadian Open. Aoyama and Shibahara saved two championship points in the final.
