The 1998 United States Capitol shooting was an attack on July 24, 1998, which led to the deaths of two United States Capitol Police officers. Officer Jacob Chestnut and Detective John Gibson were killed when Russell Eugene Weston Jr., entered the Capitol and opened fire. Gibson died during surgery at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and Chestnut died at George Washington University Hospital. Weston's exact motives are unknown, but he had expressed a strong distrust of the federal government of the United States and was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia six years before the attack. Weston was later charged on July 26 for the murder of two U.S. Capitol Police officers during the shooting rampage. As of July 2018, Weston remained in a mental institution.

William Raleigh Hull Jr. was a U.S. Representative from Missouri's 6th congressional district. He was born in Weston, Missouri into a prominent tobacco raising family. He was co-owner of Hull's Tobacco Warehouse in Weston, director of First National Bank, Leavenworth, Kansas and a mayor of Weston in 1939–1940. His first term in Congress started on January 3, 1955 and served until January 3, 1973. He was not a candidate for re-election. He died in Kansas City, Missouri and is buried at Graceland Cemetery in Weston.

The play premiered at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago on June 28, 2007, and closed on August 26, 2007. It had its Broadway debut at the Imperial Theater on December 4, 2007, and the production transferred to the Music Box Theatre on April 29, 2008. The Broadway show closed on June 28, 2009, after 648 performances and 18 previews.
