The City Hall of Old Colorado City is a Richardsonian Romanesque Revival building from the Old Colorado City of Colorado Springs, Colorado. It was a city hall after it was built in 1888, but shortly after was used for other purposes including Hibbits Antique & Furniture Store. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places. Richardsonian Romanesque is a style of Romanesque Revival architecture named after architect Henry Hobson Richardson (1838–1886), whose Trinity Church, Boston (1872–1877), is designated a National Historic Landmark. Richardson first used elements of the style in his Richardson Olmsted Complex in Buffalo, New York, designed in 1870.
Old Colorado City, formerly Colorado City, was once a town, but it is now a neighborhood within the city of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Its commercial district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. It was founded during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush of 1859 and was involved in the mining industry, both as a supply hub and as a gold ore processing center beginning in the 1890s. Residents of Colorado City worked at some of the 50 coal mines of the Colorado Springs area. It was briefly the capital of the Colorado Territory. For many years, Colorado Springs prohibited the use of alcohol within its border due to the lifestyle of Colorado City's opium dens, bordellos, and saloons. It is now a tourist area, with boutiques, art galleries, and restaurants.
Colorado Springs is a home rule municipality that is the largest city by area in Colorado as well as the county seat and the most populous municipality of El Paso County, Colorado, United States. Colorado Springs is located in the east central portion of the state. It is situated on Fountain Creek and is located 60 miles (97 km) south of the Colorado State Capitol, Denver.
It is a 2 storied building with a tower made of rough-textured stone and brick. The front of the built has 2 wagon doors under 2 masonry arches. Besides city offices, it was also first a jail and firehouse. The tower originally probably had a bell to alarm residents of the fire. It was built for Old Colorado City that was incorporated in 1887 at a cost of $5,000. [4]
Most of the brothels and saloons were located between the 2400 and 2700 blocks of Colorado Avenue, often requiring hiring of transportation to transport arrested individuals to the jail. A new building was built at 26th and Cucharras in the late 1880s to more conveniently place prisoners in jail. [4]
The former city hall served as a school from 1892 to 1902. It was called Ward School and Whittier School. It was then a hotel. The building was a bottling plant and garage in the 1930s and 1940s. Since then, the building has been used for commercial buildings. [4]
El Paso County is one of the 64 counties of the U.S. state of Colorado. The 2017 census estimate recorded an approximate population of 699,232 for El Paso County. The Census Bureau's 2017 estimate indicates it is the second-most populous county in Colorado, after the City and County of Denver. The county seat is Colorado Springs, the second most populous city in Colorado.
Cheyenne County is the sixth-least densely populated of the 64 counties of the U.S. state of Colorado. The county population was 1,836 at 2010 census. The county seat is Cheyenne Wells.
Glen Eyrie is an English Tudor-style castle built in 1871 by General William Jackson Palmer, the founder of Colorado Springs. There are 17 guest rooms in the castle, as well as 7 meeting rooms including the Castle Great Hall and 2 dining rooms. This house was his and his wife's dream home, and is near Colorado Springs in the northwest foothills just north of the Garden of the Gods rock formations. After building a large carriage house where the family lived for a time, Palmer and his wife Mary "Queen" Mellen built a 22-room frame house on the 800-acre (3.2 km2) estate. This house was remodeled in 1881 to include a tower and additional rooms, and made to resemble a stone castle in 1903, reminiscent of those native to England.
The Black Squirrel Creek Bridge carries U.S. 24 over Black Squirrel Creek in El Paso County, Colorado. Prior to 2012, it was locally known as the "green bridge" or "old green bridge"—a historic single-span, Parker through truss bridge that was completed in 1935 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. Because it no longer met highway safety standards, the bridge was dismantled and replaced by a newer span in 2012.
