The European Women's Basketball League, shortly EWBL, formerly known as Eastern European Women's Basketball League or EEWBL, is a top-level professional regional basketball league, featuring female clubs from EWBL members (Belarus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lebanon, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, Ukraine, Turkey). History

The competition was founded in 2015 under the name Eastern European Women's Basketball League (EEWBL), as a women's regional tournament for Eastern European countries. [3] [4] As the competition expanded to countries outside Eastern Europe, [5] [6] [7] [8] it was re-named European Women's Basketball League (EWBL) ahead of the 2018–19 season. [9]

Expansion

Since the inaugural season, the league have the following changes to the number of teams and the countries participating. [9]

Format

The league has a regular season followed by a final four. The regular season is divided in three stages, each stage is played at a different location and each team play more than one opponent per stage. That reduces the clubs financial travel and accommodation costs for clubs (compared to traditional home and away league format). The best teams of the regular season qualify for the final four stage. Europe, the westernmost portion of Eurasia, is often divided into regions and subregions based on geographical, cultural or historical factors. As a member of FIFA and UEFA, the Montenegro national football team has been playing official matches since March 2007. Montenegro plays in the qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship, as well as partaking in the UEFA Nations League. Apart from that, the team participates in friendly matches.

Baltic Basketball League (BBL) was the Baltic states basketball league founded in 2004. The league mainly focused on teams from the Baltic states, but teams from Sweden, Russia, Kazakhstan, Finland, and Belarus have participated in the Baltic League. After the 2017–18 season, the league announced that it was suspending its operations.

The 2007 Le Gruyère European Curling Championships were held in Füssen, Germany December 1-8, 2007. Scotland, skipped by David Murdoch, won the gold medal by beating Norway's Thomas Ulsrud 5-3 in the final. Norway had not lost a single game entering the final.

The North European Basketball League, or Northern European Basketball League (NEBL), was a short-lived regional professional basketball league. It was founded in 1998, by Šarūnas Marčiulionis and Dmitry Buriak. The league was the first commercial project of a regional league in Europe, and initially intended for participation of the best basketball teams from five countries - Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Sweden, and Finland.

Good Angels Košice, since 2018 playing as Young Angels Košice is a women's basketball team based in Košice that plays in Slovakia's domestic league and FIBA Europe’s EuroLeague Women. The team bears the name of a non-profit charitable organization Dobrý anjel. In the 2012-2013 season they reach the final four of the Euroleague for women.

Zuzana Žirková is a former Slovak professional basketball player who last played for the Good Angels Košice in 2018. Since 2018–2019 season she is coaching Young Angels Košice team in Slovak extraliga. She was selected 21st overall by the Washington Mystics in the 2003 WNBA Draft.
