The 1st Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards, presented by the Independent Filmmaker Project, were held on September 30, 1991. [1] [2] At the ceremony hosted by Charles Grodin, Irwin Young was honored with a Career Tribute with Jonathan Demme, John Turturro, Richard Price, Ernest Dickerson and Michael Hausman receiving the other individual awards. [3] [4]

The Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP) is the name for a series of membership-based, not-for-profit organizations that produce programs that assist independent filmmakers in connecting with film-industry professionals and, ultimately, audiences.

Charles Grodin American actor

Charles Grodin is an American actor, comedian, author, and former television talk show host. Grodin began his acting career in the 1960s appearing in TV serials including The Virginian. He had a small part as an obstetrician in Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby in 1968. In the 1970s he moved into film acting, including playing the lead in The Heartbreak Kid (1972) and supporting roles in Catch-22 (1970) and Heaven Can Wait (1978). He became a familiar face as a supporting actor in many Hollywood comedies of the era, including Real Life (1979), Seems Like Old Times (1980), The Incredible Shrinking Woman (1981), The Great Muppet Caper (1981), The Woman in Red (1984), The Lonely Guy (1984), Ishtar (1987), The Couch Trip (1988), Taking Care of Business (1990), and Dave (1993).

Jonathan Demme American director, producer and screenwriter

Robert Jonathan Demme was an American director, producer, and screenwriter. He is best known for directing the psychological horror The Silence of the Lambs (1991), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Director. He also directed Melvin and Howard (1980), Swing Shift (1984), Something Wild (1986), Married to the Mob (1988), the concert film Stop Making Sense (1984), Philadelphia (1993) and Rachel Getting Married (2008).

The Silence of the Lambs is a 1991 American neo-noir psychological thriller film directed by Jonathan Demme from a screenplay written by Ted Tally, adapted from Thomas Harris's 1988 novel of the same name. The film stars Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins, Scott Glenn, Ted Levine, and Anthony Heald. In the film, Clarice Starling, a young FBI trainee, seeks the advice of the imprisoned Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a brilliant psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer to apprehend another serial killer, known only as "Buffalo Bill", who skins his female victims' corpses. Illuminata is a 1998 romantic comedy film directed by John Turturro and written by Brandon Cole and John Turturro, based on Cole's play Imperfect Love. The cinematographer was Harris Savides. The puppet sequences were done by Roman Paska. Music for the 'Tuccio Operatic Dream Sequence' was composed by Richard Termini.

The 4th Chicago Film Critics Association Awards were announced on March 5, 1992 during a ceremony at The Pump Room. They honored the finest achievements in 1991 filmmaking. The nominees were revealed in January 1992. Thelma & Louise and Barton Fink tied for the most nominations with six each. The Silence of the Lambs earned the most awards (5), including Best Film.

On the Run is Bruno de Almeida's 1998 feature film debut. It stars Michael Imperioli and John Ventimiglia and is written by Joe Minion based on a story by Bruno de Almeida and Jonathan Berman. It won the award for best film at the 1999 Ourense Film Festival in Spain. On the Run was nominated for a Critic's award at the Paris Film Festival and for an Open Palm at the Gotham Awards in New York in 2000. It was released theatrically and broadcast in Europe and in the US. It had its cable debut on The Independent Film Channel in 2001, and was released on DVD in 2002, becoming a cult classic.

The 12th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards, presented by the Independent Filmmaker Project, were held on September 26, 2002 and were hosted by Rosie Perez and John Turturro. At the ceremony, Ang Lee and Bingham Ray were honored with Career Tributes, Whitney Dow and Marco Williams received the Anthony Radziwell Documentary Achievement Award and Julianne Moore was awarded the Actor Award.

The 8th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards, presented by the Independent Filmmaker Project, were held on September 23, 1998 and were hosted by Stanley Tucci. The 4th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards, presented by the Independent Filmmaker Project, were held on September 20, 1994. At the ceremony, hosted by Eric Bogosian for the second time, Sam Cohn was honored with a Career Tribute with Joel and Ethan Coen, Sigourney Weaver, Terry Southern and Howard Shore receiving the other individual awards.
