Israeli Academy of Film and Television is a non-profit organization working in the fields of film and television in Israel.

History

The Israeli Academy of Film and Television, founded in 1990, is the Israeli equivalent of the US-based Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. In 2012, it had 750 members. The organization's board includes representatives of content creators, the film and television industry, representatives of local authorities and public figures. As of 2012, the board is chaired by the producer Eitan Even and has 22 members. Each year the academy gives the Israeli Film Academy Award (Ophir Award) for outstanding Israeli films. Since 2003, in light of the progress made by the television industry, the academy added a separate ceremony in the creative realm of television.

<i>Sacred Sperm</i> 2014 Israeli film

Sacred Sperm is a 2014 Israeli documentary film directed by Ori Gruder, exploring the taboo of masturbation in Judaism. The TV version of the film world premiered at the 22nd Raindance Film Festival in October 2014 and was nominated in the short documentary film category at the end of 2014 Ophir Awards. The theatrical long version of the movie premiered at the 30th Santa Barbara Film Festival in February 2015. The Eastern Europe Premier was at the 55th Kraków International Film Festival mid 2015. This movie won the Accolade Global Film Competition - Award of Excellence at December 2014 and took the first prize Best Documentary at the 18th Religion Today Int' film festival in Italy at October 2015 and has been screened at more than 30 film festivals worldwide. The educational channel of Sweden screened the film during 2015 and it was chosen to be in the 10th most popular films of the year. Since the TV version became online In Israel itself already more than half a million viewers watched it through Hot, ynet and VOD options.

Sand Storm is a 2016 Israeli drama film directed by Elite Zexer. It was shown in the Panorama section at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival. At the 2016 Sundance Film Festival it won the Grand Jury Prize in the World Cinema Dramatic section. It won the Best Film Award at the Ophir Awards. It was selected as the Israeli entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards but it was not nominated.

The Awards of the Israeli Television Academy are annual awards for excellence in the Israeli television industry, awarded by the Israeli Academy of Film and Television. The awards are being granted since the first ceremony in 2003, hosted by Yael Abecassis. Until 2003, the awards were given during the Ophir Awards ceremony.
