Jason Rowland (born 6 August 1970) is a British former boxer who was British light welterweight champion between 1998 and 2000, and WBU light welterweight World champion in 2000.

Career

Born in London and based in West Ham, Rowland made his professional debut in September 1989 with a win over Terry Smith. He won his first 19 fights, leading to a British title eliminator against Bernard Paul in November 1995, with the BBBofC Southern Area title also at stake; Rowland was knocked out in the first round.

Bernard "Punching Postman" Paul is a Mauritian/British professional light welter/welter/light middleweight boxer of the 1990s and 2000s who won the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) Southern (England) Area light welterweight title, and Commonwealth light welterweight title, and was a challenger for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Inter-Continental light welterweight title against Jon Thaxton, British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) British light welterweight title against Mark Winters, and World Boxing Organization (WBO) Inter-Continental light welterweight title against Ricky Hatton, his professional fighting weight varied from 138 lb, i.e. light welterweight to 149 14 lb, i.e. light middleweight.

After being out of the ring in 1996, Rowland won his two fights in 1997, and in May 1998 challenged for the British title that was then held by Mark Winters; Rowland won on points to become British champion. He successfully defended the title in November 1999, stopping Jon Thaxton on a cut in the fifth round at the York Hall, Bethnal Green. [1] He relinquished the title the following year to pursue a world title. [1]

Jon Thaxton British boxer

Jonathan Thaxton is a former English professional lightweight boxer. He held European and British lightweight boxing titles in a 17-year career. He retired in October 2009, following defeat to John Murray.

York Hall boxing venue

The York Hall, officially known as York Hall Leisure Centre is a multi-purpose indoor arena and leisure complex in Bethnal Green, London and is situated on Old Ford Road. The hall, opened in 1929 with a capacity of 1,200, and is an international boxing venue and holds concerts and other live events as well as providing a local gymnasium and swimming pool.

He was due to fight Zab Judah for the IBF world title in mid-2000 but had to pull out after one of his pitbull terriers bit off part of his left index finger. [1] [2] In October 2000 he beat Viktor Baranov by unanimous decision to take the vacant WBU light welterweight title. [1] Rowland vacated the title, and by July 2001 Ricky Hatton held the WBU title and faced Rowland in his first defence, knocking him out in the fourth round. [3] [4]

Zab Judah American boxer

Zabdiel Judah is an American professional boxer. He is a multiple-time former world champion in two weight classes, having held the IBF and WBO junior welterweight titles between 2000 and 2004; the IBF junior welterweight title again in 2011; and the undisputed welterweight title in 2005, which included a reign as the lineal champion from 2005 to 2006.

Ricky Hatton English former professional boxer

Richard John Hatton, is a British former professional boxer who competed between 1997 and 2012, and has since worked as a boxing promoter and trainer. During his boxing career he held multiple world championships at light-welterweight and one at welterweight. Hatton is ranked by BoxRec as the best British light-welterweight of all time, the third best in Europe, and eleventh best worldwide. In 2005 he was named Fighter of the Year by The Ring magazine, the Boxing Writers Association of America, and ESPN.

It was almost two years before Rowland fought again, beating Paul Denton in April 2003 in what was his final fight.

Rowland went on to be a successful trainer, working with boxers such as Tony Conquest, John Wayne Hibbert, Richard Hines, Miles Shinkwin, and Mitchell Smith, and in 2010 opened the Noble Art Gym in Rainham. [5] [6] [7] [8]

Tony 'Conqueror' Conquest, is an English professional Cruiser/Heavyweight boxer who has won the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) Southern (England) Area cruiserweight title, World Boxing Organization (WBO) International cruiserweight title, and Commonwealth cruiserweight title. His professional fighting weight has varied from 193 34 lb, i.e. Cruiserweight to 215 34 lb, i.e. Heavyweight.

Rainham is a suburban town in East London, England, in the London Borough of Havering. Historically an ancient parish in the county of Essex, Rainham is 13.6 miles (21.9 km) east of Charing Cross and is surrounded by a residential area, which has grown from the historic village, to the north and a commercial area, fronting the River Thames, to the south. As part of the suburban growth of London in the 20th century, Rainham significantly expanded and increased in population, becoming part of Hornchurch Urban District in 1934, and has formed part of Greater London since 1965. Ricky Burns is a British professional boxer from Scotland. Jason Cook is a professional boxer, who fights under the nickname "The Power". As an amateur, he won a silver medal for Wales at the 1994 Commonwealth Games. He currently campaigns at Light-Welterweight, and fights out of Fight Academy Wales gym in Llanharan, South Wales under the guidance of professional coach Darren Wilson.

James Patrick "Shea" Neary is a British former professional boxer who competed from 1992 to 2000. He held the WBU light-welterweight title from 1996 to 2000, and challenged once for the Commonwealth light-welterweight title in the latter year.

Mickey Cantwell is a British former boxer who was British flyweight champion in 1996 and fought for European and World titles.
