Lance's Right, (also known as HT's), is a surf reef break located in Indonesia, off Sipore Island, part of Sumatra's Mentawai Island chain. A reef break is an area in the ocean where waves start to break once they reach the shallows of a reef. Lance's Right is known as one of the most perfect waves, and the crown jewel of the Mentawai Isles. [1]
It is known as a right, which means the wave breaks from right to left from the perspective of a watcher on shore. The location is named after the first person to find this wave, Lance Knight. Lance Knight came to the Mentawai Islands in 1991 in search of new waves, and eventually paid a local man in a canoe to take him upon the wave now known as Lance's Right.
[2] A group of surfers on the boat Indies Trader found Lance 2 weeks later, and the captain, Martin Daly, named the spot Lance's Right in honor of the first person to surf it. [3]
The other name, HTs, is an abbreviation for Hollow Trees, because of a hollow tree that was on the point but has since washed away.
Many charter boat operators consider the name disrespectful to the history of the wave and how it came to be renowned. [4]
The break at Lance's Right is a deceptively shallow reef, with an inside section known as the "surgeon's table", for the common injuries that happen to surfers who get stuck and cut on the flat section of the reef. The end section is known as The Cage, where many photographers sit in boats and take photos of the surfers.
In April 2016, the Rip Curl Mentawai Pro was held as a World Surf League (WSL) and Asian Surfing Championship (ASC) event at Lance's Right. [5] Australian Chris Zaffis won the title, beating Indonesian surfer Dede Suryana in the final round. [6]

The Banzai Pipeline, or simply Pipeline or Pipe, is a surf reef break located in Hawaii, off Ehukai Beach Park in Pupukea on O'ahu's North Shore. A reef break is an area in the ocean where waves start to break once they reach the shallows of a reef. Pipeline is known for huge waves that break in shallow water just above a sharp and cavernous reef, forming large, hollow, thick curls of water that surfers can tube ride. There are three reefs at Pipeline in progressively deeper water farther out to sea that activate according to the increasing size of approaching ocean swells.
Sipora located off Sumatra in the West Sumatra Province of Indonesia, is the second-smallest and most developed of the four Mentawai Islands at only 651.55 km2. It had a population of 17,557 at the 2010 Census; the latest official estimate is 23,122. The regency capital of the Mentawai Islands, Tuapejat, is found on Sipora. An estimated 10-15% of the original rainforest remains on this island.
The World Surf League (WSL) is the governing body for professional surfers and is dedicated to showcasing the world's best talent in a variety of progressive formats. The World Surf League was originally known as the International Professional Surfing founded by Fred Hemmings and Randy Rarick in 1976. IPS created the first world circuit of pro surfing events. In 1983 the Association of Surfing Pros took over management of the world circuit. In 2013, the ASP was acquired by ZoSea, backed by Paul Speaker, Terry Hardy, and Dirk Ziff. At the start of the 2015 season, the ASP changed its name to the World Surf League. Sophie Goldschmidt was appointed as WSL CEO on 19 July 2017. Paul Speaker had stepped down as CEO on 11 January 2017, and Dirk Ziff acted as the interim WSL CEO until Goldschmidt's appointment.
Billabong Pro Teahupoo is a professional surfing competition of the World Surf League held at the break Teahupo'o in Taiarapu, Tahiti. The Billabong Pro Teahupoo was founded in 1999 and has been recognized as "one of the world's heaviest big wave competitions". This is because Teahupoo is the only known natural wave break in the world that breaks below sea level. It is also "renowned for being the deadliest competition associated with surfing to this present date". The Billabong Pro Teahupoo has not claimed any lives since the surf competition began in 1999, but the wave has claimed lives over the years.
G-Land, also known as Plengkung Beach, is an internationally renowned surf break situated on the Grajagan Bay, Alas Purwo National Park, East Java, Indonesia about half a day by road from the popular tourist destinations of Bali. G-Land is most commonly reached via boat charter from Bali.
