The largest town in the county was Førde.
Hornindal is a former municipality in the old Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. It existed from 1867 until 1965 and then again from 1977 until 2020. It was located in the traditional district of Nordfjord. The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Grodås. The municipality was located at the eastern end of the lake Hornindalsvatnet, the deepest lake in Northern Europe. The rest of the lake lies inside neighboring Eid Municipality.
Eid is a former municipality in the county of Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. It was located in the traditional district of Nordfjord. The village of Nordfjordeid was the administrative center of the municipality. Other larger villages in Eid included Mogrenda, Stårheim, Haugen, Kjølsdalen, Heggjabygda, and Lote.

Dalsnibba is a mountain in Stranda Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It is located at the end of the Geiranger valley, about 7 km (4 mi) south of the village of Geiranger and the Geirangerfjorden. The 2-square-kilometre (0.8 sq mi) lake Djupvatnet lies directly to the southeast of the mountain. The mountain is located very near the county border with both Oppland and Sogn og Fjordane counties, in the southeastern part of Møre og Romsdal county.

Eidskyrkja or Kyrkjefjellet is a mountain in Volda Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The mountain is located just north of the border between Møre og Romsdal county and Sogn og Fjordane county. The mountain is about 5.5 kilometres (3.4 mi) south of the Austefjorden and the village of Fyrde and about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) northwest of the village of Grodås.

Sogn og Fjordane County Municipality was the regional governing administration of the old Sogn og Fjordane county in Norway. The county municipality was established in its current form on 1 January 1976 when the law was changed to allow elected county councils in Norway. The county municipality was dissolved on 1 January 2020, when Sogn og Fjordane was merged with the neighboring Hordaland county, creating the new Vestland county which is led by the Vestland County Municipality.
Fyrde is a village in Volda Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The village is located at the end of the Austefjorden branch of the main Voldsfjorden. The new European route E39 highway runs past the village of Fyrde. The new 6,563-metre (4.1 mi) long Kviven Tunnel runs through the mountain Kviven connecting the Fyrde area to the village of Grodås in neighboring Hornindal Municipality in Sogn og Fjordane county.

The Norwegian Bible Belt is a loosely defined southwestern coastal area of Norway, which is more religious than most of Norway. Typically, the definition covers Western Norway (Vestlandet) and Southern Norway (Sørlandet), which includes the counties of Rogaland, Hordaland, Sogn og Fjordane, Møre og Romsdal, Vest-Agder and Aust-Agder. However, the most urban areas, such as Stavanger, have become strongly secularised since the 1960s and are no longer considered part of the Bible Belt.

The county is one of two counties in Norway that have Nynorsk as their official written language form.
