Twelve correctional institutions in Jamaica [1] are operated by the Department of Correctional Services for the Ministry of National Security.

Jamaica Country in the Caribbean

Jamaica is an island country situated in the Caribbean Sea. Spanning 10,990 square kilometres (4,240 sq mi) in area, it is the third-largest island of the Greater Antilles and the Caribbean. Jamaica lies about 145 kilometres (90 mi) south of Cuba, and 191 kilometres (119 mi) west of Hispaniola ; the British Overseas Territory of the Cayman Islands lies some 215 kilometres (134 mi) to the north-west.

The Department of Correctional Services, Jamaica (DCSJ) is a department of the Ministry of National Security of Jamaica, headquartered in Kingston. The department operates prisons and jails in Jamaica. The current Commissioner of Corrections is Ina Hunter.

The Ministry of National Security (MNS) is a law enforcement agency of Jamaica. It has its headquarters in the North Tower of the NCB Towers in Kingston. As of 2016, the Hon. Robert Montague is the security minister. MNS began in 2001, when the Ministry of National Security and Justice separated.

Contemporary institutions

According to articles that I’ve studied, I would most certainly say that the Jamaican Correctional Facilities are very stern in how they are operated. Although there is an excessive issue with overcrowding, they continue striving to keep order and make it their due diligence to not only correct the behaviors of the inmates but make sure each inmate has what they need.

Richmond Farm Correctional Centre

Richmond Farm Prison is a prison in Jamaica that houses up to 235 first offenders serving long-term sentences. It once incorporated a large banana farm, which was later destroyed. As of 2006, an attempt was under way to regenerate the farm with crops including bananas, corn, calaloo, string beans and cucumber.

St. Catherine Adult Correctional Centre

St. Catherine Adult Correctional Centre, Jamaica, formerly Saint Catherine District Prison and sometimes called Spanish Town Prison, was built to accommodate 850 male inmates but has held over 1300 on occasions. It contains the only death-row on the island.

Tamarind Farm Correctional Centre

Tamarind Farm Correctional Centre has accommodated over 275 male inmates on occasions.

Fort Augusta Adult Correctional Centre

Fort Augusta Adult Correctional Centre, formerly Fort Augusta Prison, is Jamaica's only prison for women. It was built to accommodate 250 female inmates but has held over 280 on occasions. It has been known to run short of food.

Armadale Juvenile Correctional Centre was built to accommodate 40 girls. It is operated by the Department of Correctional Services for the Ministry of National Security.

Alexandria is a town in the parish of Saint Ann, Jamaica.

Hill Top Juvenile Correctional Centre

Hill Top Correctional Centre was built to accommodate ninety eight boys. It is operated by the Department of Correctional Services for the Ministry of National Security.

Horizon Adult Remand Centre opened in 2002 with a capacity of 1026.

Stony Hill, Jamaica

Stony Hill is a residential neighbourhood in St. Andrew Parish, Surrey County, on the northern outskirts of Kingston, Jamaica. As of 2009 it had a population of 8,388.

Saint Andrew Parish, Jamaica Parish of Jamaica

Saint Andrew is a parish, situated in the southeast of Jamaica in the county of Surrey. It lies north, west and east of Kingston, and stretches into the Blue Mountains. In the 2011 census, it had 573,369, the highest population of any of the parishes in Jamaica. George William Gordon, one of Jamaica's seven National Heroes, was born in this parish.

In addition, many remand prisoners are held in police station gaols.

The Silverwater Correctional Complex, an Australian maximum and minimum security prison complex for males and females, is located in Silverwater, 21 kilometres (13 mi) west of the Sydney central business district in New South Wales, Australia. The complex is operated by Corrective Services NSW, an agency of the Department of Attorney General and Justice, of the Government of New South Wales.

ACT Corrective Services (ACTCS) is an agency of the Justice and Community Safety Directorate (JACSD) of the Australian Capital Territory government in the Australian Capital Territory, Australia. It is responsible for a wide range of activities and services in the area aimed at protecting the community and reducing offending behaviour.

Corrections Victoria is part of the Department of Justice in the Victorian Government, and is responsible for the provision of custodial and community-based services as an important element of the criminal justice system in the state of Victoria, Australia. Greg Wilson was appointed Secretary of the Department of Justice in April 2013.

Correctional services are operated by both the federal and provincial governments. Offenders who receive sentences of less than two years or who receive community sentences such as fines, community service work or probation are under provincial jurisdiction. Offenders who receive prison sentences of two years or more are the responsibility of the federal government. Young offender services, including pre-trial supervision, community and custody sentences and Extrajudicial Sanctions Programs, are the responsibility of the provincial government.

Louisiana Department of Public Safety & Corrections

The Department of Public Safety and Corrections (DPS&C) is a state agency of Louisiana, headquartered in Baton Rouge. The agency comprises two major areas: Public Safety Services and Corrections Services. The Secretary, who is appointed by the Governor, serves as the department's chief executive officer. The Corrections Services Deputy Secretary, Undersecretary, and Assistant Secretaries for the Office of Adult Services and the Office of Youth Development report directly to the Secretary. Headquarters Administration consists of centralized Divisions that support the management and operations of the adult and juvenile institutions, adult and juvenile probation and parole district offices, and all other services provided by the department.

Lowell Correctional Institution

Lowell Correctional Institution is a women's prison in unincorporated Marion County, Florida, north of Ocala, in the unincorporated area of Lowell. A part of the Florida Department of Corrections, it serves as the primary prison for women in the state. Almost 3,000 women are incarcerated in the complex, which includes the Lowell Annex. As of 2015 2,696 women are in the main Lowell CI, making it the largest prison for women in the United States; its prison population became larger than that of the Central California Women's Facility that year.

Rio Cobre Juvenile Correctional Centre

Rio Cobre Juvenile Correctional Centre was built to accommodate 120 male inmates.

Bamboo, Jamaica

Bamboo is a settlement in The Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica. Its population as of a 1991 census was 3,732 inhabitants.

Mary Wade Correctional Centre is a prison in suburban Sydney, Australia, operated by Corrective Services NSW, an agency of the New South Wales state government. The prison houses female inmates on remand. The centre was named for Mary Wade, a convict transported to colonial NSW in 1790.
