The MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal 2017 is an event of the World Surf League for the 2017 World Surf League Men's Championship Tour. [1]

MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal formerly known as Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal or Rip Curl Pro Portugal is a professional surfing competition of the ASP World Tour held every year in October at the Supertubos beach in Peniche, Portugal. The event was first founded in 2009 as Rip Curl Search Portugal. The defending champion is the Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina who won the event in 2017.

World Surf League Governing body for professional surfers

The World Surf League (WSL) is the governing body for professional surfers and is dedicated to showcasing the world's best talent in a variety of progressive formats. The World Surf League was previously known as the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) from 1983 to 2014. The organization was founded in 1976 by Fred Hemmings and Randy Rarick.

2017 World Surf League sporting competition event

The 2017 World Surf League Championship Tour (CT) is a professional competitive surfing league run by the World Surf League. Men and women compete in separate tours with events taking place from late February to mid-December, at various surfing locations around the world.

Contents

Peniche will receive for the ninth consecutive time the race of the world championship of surfing, which is the 10th of 11 stages of WSL in 2017. The event will be held from 20 to 31 October in the Supertubos beach at Peniche, (Leiria, Portugal) [2] finishing earlier in 25 October with the victory of Gabriel Medina over Julian Wilson. [3] [4] This was Medina's first title in Portugal after a second place back in 2012.

Supertubos

Supertubos is a wave and beach located in Peniche, Portugal. The break offers world-class surfing conditions with its curvy waves and hollow powerful tubes, and is the site of the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal the World Surf League Men's Championship Tour event.

Peniche is a seaside municipality and a city in Portugal. It is located in Oeste Subregion in formerly Estremadura Province. The population in 2011 was 27,753, in an area of 77.55 km2. The city itself has a population of about 15,600 inhabitants.

Courtney Conlogue is an American professional surfer. She was born in Santa Ana, California. Courtney learned to surf at the age of 4. In 2004 when she was 11, Conlogue was the youngest athlete to be selected to the USA Junior Surf Team. She went on to achieve 11th place in the 2005 ISA World Junior Surfing Championships. By the time she was 14, she had won a surfing gold medal as a member of the U.S. Team in the X Games. Johanne Defay is a French professional surfer. She was born in Le Puy-en-Velay, Auvergne, France. She began surfing at the age of 8 off the beaches of Reunion Island, which is her home today. After Johanne's first competition when she was only ten years old, she quickly moved through the European amateur ranks to eventually take on the WSL World Qualifying Series. In 2008 she almost gave up competing. Finding it difficult to step up from the juniors to the WQS and then when the economy crashed sending surf companies pulling sponsorships, Johanne found herself without sponsors and without decent results.
