Michael B. Colbert is the director of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS), a $20-plus billion agency with nearly 4,000 employees. ODJFS is the largest agency in the state and is responsible for supervising the state's public assistance, workforce development, unemployment compensation, child and adult protective services, adoption, child care, and child support programs. ODJFS also is the single state agency responsible for the administration of Ohio's Medicaid program. Colbert was the first minority appointment to the cabinet of Governor John Kasich. [1]

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) is the administrative department of the Ohio state government responsible for supervising the state's public assistance, workforce development, unemployment compensation, child and adult protective services, adoption, child care, and child support programs. Prior to July 2013, ODJFS was also the state agency responsible for the administration of Ohio's Medicaid program. In July 2013, a new state agency was created, the Ohio Department of Medicaid (ODM), Ohio’s first Executive-level Medicaid agency. ODJFS employs about 2,300 full time employees and has an annual budget of $3.3 billion.

John Kasich American politician and former television host

John Richard Kasich Jr. is an American politician, author, and television news host who served as the 69th Governor of Ohio from 2011 to 2019. Elected in 2010 and re-elected in 2014, Kasich is a Republican.

Prior to joining Governor John R. Kasich's cabinet, Colbert served as the ODJFS chief fiscal officer for almost three years. In that role, he supervised the agency's adoption of the Ohio Administrative Knowledge system, Ohio's new financial system, and the County Finance Information System. Before joining ODJFS, Colbert was senior audit manager for the Ohio Auditor of State, where he worked for 15 years.

Colbert is a U.S. Army veteran and a graduate of Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, where he earned a bachelor's degree in finance and accounting. He is a member of the National Association of State Human Services Finance Officers, the Government Finance Officers Association and the Association of Government Accountants. [2]

Controversy

On August 1, 2012, four Members of Congress from Ohio sent Colbert a letter requesting that he take action to reduce his agency's "high percentage of improper denials of unemployment benefits" and "high underpayment rate for paid unemployment benefits claims". [3]

In the United States, benefits are funded by a compulsory governmental insurance system, not taxes on individual citizens. Depending on the jurisdiction and the status of the person, those sums may be small, covering only basic needs, or may compensate the lost time proportionally to the previous earned salary.

He earned 154 delegates and won only one contest, his home state, Ohio. Kasich suspended his campaign on May 4, 2016, one day after becoming the last major challenger to Donald Trump for the nomination. Kasich vied to become the first Pennsylvania native to hold the office since James Buchanan in 1856, as well as the first from the city of Pittsburgh to do so.

Deborah A. Ashenhurst American National Guard general

Deborah A. Ashenhurst served in the Ohio National Guard for 37 years and now holds a position in the Cabinet of Governor Mike DeWine as the Director of the Department Veterans Services. In January 2019, Ashenhurst was appointed as the first female Director of the Ohio Department of Veteran Services which supplies benefits and resources for Ohio's past service members.
