The 18 municipalities of the Northern Savonia Region (Finnish : Pohjois-Savo; Swedish : Norra Savolax) in Finland are divided on five sub-regions.
Savonia is a historical province in the east of Finland. It borders Tavastia, Ostrobothnia, and Karelia. In current day, Savonia is divided in two provinces Northern Savonia and Southern Savonia. The largest cities in Savonia by population are Kuopio, Mikkeli, Savonlinna, Varkaus and Iisalmi.
Ostrobothnia, Swedish: Österbotten, Finnish: Pohjanmaa is a historical province comprising a large western and northern part of modern Finland. It is bounded by Karelia, Savonia, Tavastia and Satakunda in the south, the Bothnian Sea, Bothnian Bay and Swedish Västerbotten in the west, Laponia in the north and Russia in the east.
Eastern Finland was a province of Finland from 1997 to 2009. It bordered the provinces of Oulu, Western Finland and Southern Finland. It also bordered Russia to the east.
Kuopio is a Finnish city and municipality located in the region of Northern Savonia (Pohjois-Savo). It has a population of 118,667, which makes it the ninth-most populous city in Finland. Kuopio has a total area of 4,326.35 square kilometres (1,670.41 sq mi), of which 719.85 km2 (277.94 sq mi) is water and half is forest. Though the city’s population is a spread-out 74/km2 (190/sq mi), the city's urban areas are populated comparably densely, making Kuopio Finland’s second-most densely populated city.

Northern Savonia or, officially, North Savo is a region in eastern Finland. It borders the regions of Southern Savonia, Central Finland, North Ostrobothnia, Kainuu, and North Karelia. Kuopio is the largest city in the region.
Finland is divided into 70 sub-regional units. The sub-regions are formed by groups of municipalities within the 19 regions of Finland. The sub-regions represent a LAU 1 level of division used in conjunction with the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics.
The 14 municipalities of the Southern Savonia Region in Finland are divided on three sub-regions.
Southern Savonia or, officially, South Savo is a region in the south-east of Finland. It borders the regions of Northern Savonia, North Karelia, South Karelia, Kymenlaakso, Päijät-Häme, and Central Finland. The total area of Southern Savonia is 18,768.33 km2, with a population of 153,738 (2011).
Juankoski is a former town and municipality of Finland.
Kangaslampi is a former municipality of Finland. It was consolidated to Varkaus on 1 January 2005.
Nilsiä is a former small town and a municipality of Finland.
Pertunmaa is a municipality of Finland located in the Southern Savonia region. The municipality has a population of 1,706 and covers an area of 454.20 square kilometres (175.37 sq mi) of which 79.7 km2 (30.8 sq mi) is water. The population density is 4.56 inhabitants per square kilometre (11.8/sq mi).
Varpaisjärvi is a former municipality of Finland. It was consolidated with the municipality of Lapinlahti on January 1, 2011.
Vehmersalmi is a former municipality of Finland. It has been a part of the city of Kuopio since January 1, 2005.
