History

Nate 'n Al was started in 1945 by friends Al Mendelson and Nate Rimer. The two met in a Detroit deli twenty years before, and came up with the idea of opening their own deli. They moved to California and opened their deli calling it Nate ‘n Al, in Beverly Hills. It had an initial capacity of thirty persons. [2]

In 2018, the restaurant was put up for sale by the grand children of original owners, then it was bought by Shelli and Irving Azoff the following year. [3] In 2022, the Azoffs formed a partnership with H.Wood Group who will assume daily management of the restaurant while the Azoffs assumed advisory and financial role. [1]

Ratings

LA Weekly ranked the deli's matzo ball soup #1 in the magazine's "Top 5 Matzo Ball Soups in Los Angeles". [4] CBS/Los Angeles ranked the deli's Corned Beef Reuben Sandwich on its list of the "Best Reubens in Los Angeles". [5]

Ownership

After remaining a family restaurant for three generations, in February 2018, it was rumored that the original owners planned to sell the restaurant, possibly leading to its closure. [6] In January 2019, it was announced that a group of investors including Rande Gerber and Cindy Crawford, Michael Meldman, Jeff Shell, and Jay Sures would purchase the deli and keep it open. Jewish deli

A Jewish deli, also known as a Jewish delicatessen, is a delicatessen establishment that serves various traditional dishes in Ashkenazi Jewish cuisine. They are typically known for their sandwiches such as pastrami on rye, as well as their soups such as matzo ball soup, among other dishes. Most of these establishments are traditionally considered Ashkenazi. Like much of the Jewish cuisine stemming from the period of the Jewish diaspora, the emergence of the Jewish deli developed in accordance with local culture. These days, Jewish delicatessens serve a variety of Jewish dishes. While some delis have full kosher-certification, others operate in a kosher-style, refraining from mixing meat and dairy in the same dish, despite potentially using non-certified ingredients. There are also delis that serve food without adhering to any traditional Jewish dietary restrictions, offering non-Kosher dishes such as the Reuben sandwich.
