Paul Van Cauwenberge (born 1 April 1949 in Zottegem) is a Belgian academic and chairman of Hogeschool Gent. He was the rector of Ghent University from 1 October 2005 until 1 October 2013. His successor is Anne De Paepe.

Zottegem is a municipality located in Belgium and more particularly in Flanders, in the province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the town of Zottegem proper and the villages of Elene, Erwetegem, Godveerdegem, Grotenberge, Leeuwergem, Oombergen, Sint-Goriks-Oudenhove, Sint-Maria-Oudenhove, Strijpen and Velzeke-Ruddershove. On January 1, 2018, Zottegem had a total population of 26,373. The total area is 56.66 km² which gives a population density of 470 inhabitants per km².

University College Ghent is the largest university college in Flanders, with three faculties, one School of Arts and 13,000 students. Its establishment in 1995 is the outcome of two successful mergers that involved sixteen Belgian institutions of higher education. Many had been influential leaders in higher education for several decades. The current faculties are spread over the city center of Ghent and Aalst.

A rector is a senior official in an educational institution, and can refer to an official in either a university or a secondary school. Outside the English-speaking world the rector is often the most senior official in a university, whilst in the United States the most senior official is often referred to as President and in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth of Nations the most senior official is the Chancellor, whose office is primarily ceremonial and titular. The term and office of a rector can be referred to as a rectorate. The title is used widely in universities in Europe. and is very common in Latin American countries. It is also used in Brunei, Turkey, Russia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Israel and the Middle East. In the ancient universities of Scotland the office is sometimes referred to as Lord Rector, is the third most senior official, and is usually responsible for chairing the University Court.

Career

Van Cauwenberge is a senior full professor in ear, nose and throat surgery (Otorhinolaryngology) at the faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Otorhinolaryngology is a surgical subspecialty within medicine that deals with conditions of the ear, nose, and throat (ENT) and related structures of the head and neck. Doctors who specialize in this area are called otorhinolaryngologists, otolaryngologists, ENT doctors, ENT surgeons, or head and neck surgeons. Patients seek treatment from an otorhinolaryngologist for diseases of the ear, nose, throat, base of the skull, for the surgical management and reconstruction of cancers and benign tumors of the head and neck.

Van Cauwenberge started his career at Ghent University in 1973. He was the dean of the faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences^[1] from 1999 until 2004. Since 1978, he has served in the Board of Governors and the Executive Board of Ghent University.

Dean is a title employed in academic administrations such as colleges or universities for a person with significant authority over a specific academic unit, over a specific area of concern, or both. Deans are common in private preparatory schools, and occasionally found in middle schools and high schools as well.

Van Cauwenberge was managing Ghent University as a rector from 1 October 2005 until 30 September 2013. He was being assisted by vice-rector Luc Moens. On October 1, 2013, he was succeeded by Anne De Paepe. On the same day he has been assigned as chairman of Hogeschool Gent.^[2]

Though she was not allowed to pursue an academic career, De Vriese opened a private pediatric clinic and served as the director of the Children's Ward at the Bijloke Hospital in Ghent.
