The Queen's Club Covered Court Championship was a men's and women's indoor wood court tennis tournament founded in 1890. [1] Also known as the Queens Club Covered Court Tournament. The tournament was first played at the Queen's Club , London, England. [2] It was played annually till 1939. [2]

History

In March 1890 the Queen's Club Covered Court Championship was established. [3] The inaugural singles champions were Harry S. Barlow (men) and May Jacks (women). [3] The men's event in the early 1890's was sometimes held at the Hyde Park Club's indoor courts at, Bayswater, London. [4] The tournament was staged annually usually in March or sometimes early April until 1939 when it was discontinued due to World War II. [2]

The 1881 men's tennis season was composed of the sixth annual pre-open era tour now incorporated 73 tournaments staged in Australia, Canada, Great Britain and Ireland, and the United States. The 1881 Wimbledon Championships was won by William Renshaw. This year also saw the inaugural and important 1881 U.S. National Championships held at Newport Casino which Richard Sears won. This was also the year that the United States National Lawn Tennis Association, which is the world's first national tennis association, was founded. Renshaw then won two other big tournaments of the year, the Irish Lawn Tennis Championships and Princes Club Championships, whilst Richard Taswell Richardson won the prestigious Northern Championships.

The Middlesex Championships. or Middlesex Lawn Tennis Championships and also known as the Middlesex Open Tennis Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis founded at the Chiswick Park Lawn Tennis Club,Chiswick Park, Chiswick, Middlesex, Great Britain in 1884 and known as the Chiswick Park Club Open Lawn Tennis Tournament during the early editions of the event. The Exmouth Open, originally called the Exmouth Lawn Tennis Club Tournament or simply Exmouth Tournament, was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1880. From 1890 the event was known as the Exmouth Open Tennis Tournament. It was hosted by the Exmouth Archery, Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club, Exmouth, Devon, Great Britain until 1927. The Chingford Open also called the Connaught Open Lawn Tennis Tournament, was a men's clay court tennis tournament founded in 1888. The tournament was organised by the Connaught Club and played in Chingford, Essex, England and was held annually until 1890 as part of the LTA Circuit when it was discontinued.

The New England Indoor Championships was a men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1932. Also known in its early years as the New England Covered Court Championships, it was first organised by the New England Lawn Tennis Association and played at the Longwood Covered Courts, Longwood Cricket Club, Longwood, Massachusetts, United States and plaued on wood courts then later switching to carpet courts. The event was held in different locations until 1973 as part of the ILTF Independent Circuit when it was discontinued.
