The Men's 49er was a sailing event on the Sailing at the 2016 Summer Olympics program in Rio de Janeiro and took place between 12–18 August at Marina da Glória. 13 races (the last one a medal race) were held.

The medals were presented by Barbara Kendall, IOC member, New Zealand and Adrienne Greenwood, Vice President of World Sailing.

    Peter Burling is a New Zealand sailor. He was the 2021 America's Cup winning skipper and helmsman, and the 2017 America's Cup winning helmsman of Team New Zealand. Burling won an Olympic gold medal in the 49er class at the 2016 games and silver medals in the 2012 and 2020 Olympics.

    The men's 49er was a sailing event on the Sailing at the 2012 Summer Olympics program in Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. Sixteen races were scheduled and completed. 40 sailors, on 20 boats, from 20 nations competed. Ten boats qualified for the medal race on course area Nothe in front of Weymouth, where each position scored double points.

    Andrew Blair Tuke is a New Zealand sailor who won the 2021 Americas Cup Held in Auckland and also won the 2017 Version held in Bermuda. He also won the gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics, and the silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the 49er class alongside Peter Burling.

    Francesca Clapcich is an Italian sports sailor. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, she competed in the Women's Laser Radial class, finishing in 19th place. At the 2016 Olympics, she competed in the women's 49erFX class with Giulia Conti, finishing in 5th place.

    Sailing competitions at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo took place from 25 July to 4 August 2021 at the Enoshima Yacht Harbor in Enoshima. The venue was also used for the 1964 Olympic Games although significantly regenerated, the IOC now encouraging regeneration, cost reductions and sustainability. The RS:X, Laser, Laser Radial, Finn, 470, 49er, 49erFX, and Nacra17 are all returning for 2020; there are no significant changes to the Olympic programme from 2016.

    The Women's 49er FX was a sailing event on the Sailing at the 2016 Summer Olympics program in Rio de Janeiro and took place from 12 to 18 August at Marina da Glória. Thirteen races were held.

    Sailing competitions at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto will be held from July 12 to 19 at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club's ferry station and parking lot on the mainland side of the harbour. A total of ten events will be contested.
