Arends has a career-high ATP doubles ranking of world No. 55, achieved on 16 July 2018, and also attained his singles career-high ranking of world No. 1057 in January 2015. He has won one doubles ATP title with David Pel. Arends competes mainly on the ATP Challenger Tour and ITF Men's circuit where he has won 31 titles including 20 Challengers. He also reached two ATP doubles finals partnering Matwé Middelkoop and one with David Pel.

The 2021 ATP Tour calendar comprised the Grand Slam tournaments, the ATP Finals, the ATP Masters 1000, the ATP Cup, the ATP 500 series and the ATP 250 series. Also included in the 2021 calendar were the Davis Cup, the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Next Gen ATP Finals, Laver Cup, none of which distributed ranking points.

In the doubles of the 2019 Meerbusch Challenger tennis competition, David Pérez Sanz and Mark Vervoort were the defending champions but only Vervoort chose to defend his title, partnering Íñigo Cervantes. Vervoort lost in the first round to Sander Arends and David Pel.

Reese Stalder is an American tennis player who specializes in doubles. He has a career high ATP has doubles ranking of No. 60 achieved on 4 December 2023. He also has a career high singles ranking of No. 956 achieved on 28 June 2021. He has won nine ATP Challenger doubles titles, seven of them with Evan King. Stalder played college tennis at Texas Christian University.

Robin Haase and Matwé Middelkoop defeated Lloyd Harris and Tim Pütz in the final, 4–6, 7–6(7–5), [10–5], to win the doubles tennis title at the 2022 ABN AMRO Rotterdam. It was their fourth career ATP Tour doubles title as a team, and marked Haase's seventh individual doubles title and Middelkoop's 12th. Harris and Pütz were competing in their first event together.

The 2022 Gijón Open was a professional men's tennis tournament played on indoor hard courts. It was the first edition of the event, and part of the ATP World Tour 250 series of the 2022 ATP Tour. It was played at Palacio de Deportes in Gijón, Spain, from 10 to 16 October 2022.
