The mission of the Sound Adirondack Growth Alliance (SAGA), a seven-year-old organization operating in Saranac Lake, New York, is "To enhance and protect the unique character of our communities through sound planning and development." Officially, SAGA has said: "This is not about Wal-Mart or any other retailer. It is about making sure our community can maintain its small-town character, something that becomes more important every year for tourism-based communities such as ours. It is about making sure any retailer or any commercial development that comes to town is an appropriate size, has an appearance that fits in with the character of our community and addresses costs for the additional infrastructure (water, sewer, highways, SEQR requirements, etc)... SAGA has decided not to oppose any retailer that meets the following criteria:
Is 40,000 square feet (3,700m2) or less, or a total shopping center of 68,000 square feet (6,300m2) or less;
Is attractive in appearance and develops the area using state of the art methods to minimize the environmental impact of the new structure(s) and parking lot, including light pollution;
Is located in a suitable spot;
Absorbs the additional costs of upgrading all the infrastructure that will be required of a commercial development."
The Wal-Mart corporation backed down from its original plans to build in Saranac Lake, but in 2006 announced new plans to build a 121,000-square-foot (11,200m2) Supercenter on Lake Flower Avenue. SAGA recognizes the need for improved shopping, particularly since the Ames department store closed, and especially sees the need for a high quality grocery store. The community has retail sources, but only one major grocery store chain (which operates two stores in the village - one located downtown and one located at one entrance to the village). SAGA continues to work to advocate for downtown development and a retail cap, and continues to educate the community about the harmful effects of Wal-Mart.

The Bramalea City Centre is a large shopping mall located in the city of Brampton, Ontario, Canada. With over a 1.5 million square feet of retail space and more than 300 outlets, it is one of Canada's largest shopping malls. Regarded as a super regional mall, the Bramalea City Centre has a market of more than 500,000 residents and attracts 16 million visitors annually. Opened in November 1971, the mall has expanded several times and today includes approximately 100 stores and services, and encompasses 570,837 square feet (53,032.5 m2) of retail floor space. The mall also featured a Safeway until the 1990s, when the store moved to its own location west of 36th Street.
The Station Mall, is a shopping mall located in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. With 97 stores and 555,000 square feet (51,600 m2) of retail space, it is the second largest shopping mall in Northern Ontario, trailing just behind the New Sudbury Centre in Greater Sudbury in area. Built in 1973, the mall has since undergone two major expansions. Its major tenants include 52,000 square feet (4,800 m2) Galaxy Cinemas movie theatre complex. The mall is located on the waterfront in downtown Sault Ste. Marie, and is roughly five minutes away from the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge to the United States. The Sault Ste. Marie railway station is located in the mall's parking lot.
Bayview Village Shopping Centre is a shopping mall in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The 440,000-square-foot (41,000 m2) shopping mall is located at the northeast corner of Bayview Avenue and Sheppard Avenue in the former city of North York. It has a total of 110 stores, the anchor stores being Loblaws, Shoppers Drug Mart and LCBO.
The Sunset Esplanade is an outdoor shopping center located in the southeast part of Hillsboro, in the U.S. state of Oregon. Opened in 1989, the center is along Tualatin Valley Highway at Minter Bridge Road and includes about five anchor tenants and about thirty other tenants in a complex with about 363,000 square feet (33,700 m2) of space. Neighbors opposed the center when it was proposed, due to concerns over increased traffic and how it would blend with existing residential neighborhoods. After appeals to the Hillsboro City Council and state land use board, the $23 million project received approval almost two years after first proposed.
Novi Town Center is an open-air shopping center located at Novi Road and Grand River in Novi, Michigan, USA, in Metro Detroit. Owned by CBRE, the center is on Interstate 96, with the Twelve Oaks Mall on the other side of the road.
True North Square is a public plaza and mixed-use development in downtown Winnipeg, Manitoba. Managed by True North Real Estate Development, a joint venture between James Richardson & Sons and True North Sports & Entertainment, it is still under construction, with two buildings officially complete and open.
Four Seasons Mall was an enclosed shopping mall in Plymouth, Minnesota, a suburb of the Twin Cities. Four Seasons Mall once comprised 117,000 square feet (11,000 m2) of retail space with approximately 26 storefronts. The mall opened in 1978 and the last tenant, Marcello's Pizza, closed on February 29, 2012. The mall was abandoned for a decade until the city demolished it in late 2022. A 411-unit apartment complex, several office and retail buildings, and a Metrolink park-and-ride are planned for the site.
