The University Students' Council (Maltese : Kunsill Studenti Universitarji), also known in abbreviation as KSU, is a Maltese national students' union. It is the oldest extant student organization in Europe. [1] The KSU was established by Arturo Mercieca (1878-1969), later Chief Justice Sir Arturo Mercieca (1924-1940), in 1901 as the Comitato Permanente Universitario, also previously known as University Permanent Committee. History

The student organization 'Kunsill Studenti Universitarji' (KSU) was founded in 1901. [2] [4] [5]

Students' contribution

The organization promotes and recognizes students contributions, given at the University of Malta and other related education institutions, which represents. KSU is a forum where students may express their opinion not related to their studies. The KSU gives an opportunity to contribute to the University of Malta. [2]

Electoral system

The electoral system is a first past the post one, whereby a block vote winning the majority of votes elects all its candidates, to the executive committee. This brought a system of block-voting between student organisations.

Aims

The KSU is an evolving organization. It finds its roots in a set of simplified objectives. Over the past century, since its foundation, the KSU has been working to:

European Students' Union

On an international level, KSU is a full member of European Students' Union (ESU), the international union of students in Europe. The ESU represesents 45 National Unions of Students in 34 European countries, including KSU. It represents over 10 million students European students. It is regarded by the European Commission, the Council of Europe, UNESCO, the Bologna Follow-up Group, the European University Association (EUA) and various other stakeholders in education as being the leading representative voice of students in Europe. Throughout the years various Maltese Students have formed part of ESU Committees. KSU is an official founding member of MEDNET (Mediterranean Network of Student Representatives). [4] [10]

Freshers' Week

Since 2007 the KSU welcomes freshers (students) on campus at the start of every new academic year at the University of Malta. [11] Every year the KSU encourages students to visit the University campus to meet their course mates, check out the company stands and get freebies. [12] [13] [14] [15]

Library hours

The library of University of Malta, in collaboration with the KSU's proposal, launched its extended hours to facilitate students with their studies. In 2013, the library hours were extended for the Health Sciences library, to increase the study areas available and accommodate more students. [16] [17] [18]

Stompers RFC is a Maltese rugby club based in Sliema. They currently compete in the Malta Rugby Union Championship.

Christopher Fearne is a Maltese physician and politician. He was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Health in April 2014 and Minister for Health since April 2016. In July 2017, the Labour Party elected him as Deputy Leader for Parliamentary Affairs, thus assuming the role of Deputy Prime Minister of Malta and Leader of the House.

Godfrey Baldacchino is a Maltese and Canadian social scientist. He was Pro Rector (2016-2021) and Professor of Sociology at the University of Malta. Between 2016 and 2020, he was the UNESCO Co-Chair in Island Studies and Sustainability at the University of Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Julani Kyle Archibald is a Kittitian professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Honduran club Victoria and the Saint Kitts and Nevis national team. Besides Malta, Archibald has played club football in Saint Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago, and Honduras.

The Maltese Futsal League,, formerly the Gatorade League but now known as the Enemed Futsal League for sponsorship reasons, is the official futsal league in Malta and was founded in 2011. The Maltese futsal championship currently consists of 14 teams. It is organised by the Futsal Malta Association and the Malta Football Association. Prior to a decrease in teams, the league used to be known as the Maltese Futsal Premier Division, which was the highest tier, with a promotion and relegation system tied to the Maltese Futsal First Division.

The University of Malta Students' Futsal Team, known as the University Futsal Team for short, is a futsal team that competes in the Maltese Futsal League. The team previously bore the name of its parent club, Mdina Knights F.C. In 2018, the team won its first silverware in the Maltese Futsal Knockout Cup.

The Trans European Policy Studies Association (TEPSA) is a European network of research institutes and think-tanks in the field of European affairs. Founded in 1974, it is an international nonprofit association under Belgian law with 44 member organisations in 37 different European countries, and an office in Brussels.

They ran for the 2019 European Parliament election in Malta. Tolu is currently deputy chairperson of AD+PD and previously served as co-spokesperson of the Federation of Young European Greens.

Blanche Huber was the first female doctor in Malta. She was also the first known female medical student in Malta, and graduated as a doctor from the University of Malta in 1925, having entered it in 1919. However, she always practiced as a pharmacist in Żejtun.
