The Vikingland Band Festival parade marching championship is held annually in Alexandria, Minnesota on the last Sunday of June. The event was founded in 1985 and is widely regarded as the midwest's biggest and most prestigious summer marching band competition. It is often regarded as the unofficial state championship for parade marching in Minnesota.
The parade features only marching bands. It does not include floats or other units commonly associated with parades. Bands march at a three-block interval to prevent their music from blending together. Alexandria's extra-wide main street provides a venue for the performances.
A panel of six judges provides taped feedback and scores for each band. Placement awards are presented to every band, with the top band in each class earning the distinction of Class Champion. The overall high scoring band of the day is named the Grand Champion. Each champion band is awarded a traveling flag to carry for one year. If a band wins its champion title for three consecutive years, the band earns the right to keep the flag. Caption awards are presented for the top wind section, percussion section and color guard in each class.
One band is named the "People's Choice" by a panel of non-professional judges.
Although many of the performing bands are experienced competitors with long-standing traditions of excellence, the festival welcomes younger bands as well. Organizers believe the education, intensity, and sportsmanship can provide a valuable experience for any band.
The tradition of including non-competing "honor bands" in the parade was started in 1989 as a way to showcase a variety of marching styles. Styles represented have included foreign bands, military bands, bagpipes, drum and bugle corps, and percussion lines.[citation needed]

No awards were presented during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 (online video format) nor in 2021 (live event with ratings-only format and no awards ceremony). Competition resumed in 2022.
Since 1989 the festival has presented traveling flags to the Grand Champion and Class Champion bands. A band can retire a flag in its honor by winning the title three consecutive years. Four bands have retired Grand Champion flags: Litchfield (1989), Irondale (1993, 1996), Waconia (2006), and the 728 Cadets (2015). Eleven bands have retired Class Champion flags: Bertha-Hewitt (1990, 1997), Dassel-Cokato (2019), Irondale (1993, 1996), Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg (2011, 2014, 2017, 2022), Litchfield (1989, 1992, 1995, 1998, 2002), Long Prairie (1989, 1995, 1998), Park Center (1999, 2007), Sauk Rapids-Rice (2009), Winona Cotter (1994, 2006), Waconia (2015), and the 728 Cadets (2015).[citation needed]

The Royal Canadian Air Cadets is a Canadian national youth program for young individuals aged 12 to 19. Under the authority of the National Defence Act, the program is administered by the Canadian Forces (CF) and funded through the Department of National Defence (DND). Additional support is provided by the civilian Air Cadet League of Canada (ACL). Together with the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets and Royal Canadian Army Cadets, it forms the "largest federally funded youth program in the country". Bands of America (BOA) is a music education advocacy organization and promoter of high school marching band competitions in the United States, such as the annual Grand National Championships. Established in 1975 as Marching Bands of America (MBA), founder Larry McCormick's goal was to provide educational opportunities for music students nationwide. McCormick organized the first annual Summer Workshop and Festival in 1976. Renamed Bands of America in 1984, the organization became an independent, tax-exempt entity in 1988. In 2006, Bands of America merged with the Music for All Foundation, a music education advocacy organization, becoming the flagship program of the combined organization. Bands of America has received numerous awards from IFEA.
The Princeton University Band serves as the marching band and pep band of Princeton University. Like most other Ivy League bands, it is a scramble band. To members and fans, it is often known as the PUB or simply The Band. Many alumni refer to it as the Tiger Band.

The Pride of Minnesota serves as an ambassador for the university, representing the school at major events both on and off campus. The band performs before, during, and after all home Golden Gopher football games and bowl games, occasional away games, local parades, numerous pepfests, exhibition performances, as well as a series of indoor concerts at the end of the regular football season. Members of the band, along with non-member students, also participate in smaller athletic pep bands that perform at other major sporting events, including men's hockey, men's basketball, women's hockey, women's basketball, and women's volleyball.

Irondale High School is a public high school in New Brighton, Minnesota, United States. Part of the Mounds View Public Schools district, the school is in a suburban area ten miles north of downtown Minneapolis and Saint Paul. Irondale made headlines in late 2011 when it introduced its Early College program, which began in the 2012–13 school year. The program, run in conjunction with Anoka-Ramsey Community College, allows students to graduate in four years with both a high school diploma and an associate's degree. This program prompted a visit from US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, who praised Minnesota's efforts to further education.

The Golden Eagle Band (GEB) is the official instrumental ensemble of the University of North Georgia's Corps of Cadets. It serves as one of the featured units at all Cadet Reviews and military ceremonies during the school year. The unit also regularly travels off-campus to perform in parades, festivals, and military ceremonies throughout the Southeast.
The Regimental Band and Pipes was founded on The Citadel campus in Charleston, South Carolina in 1909 with late marine general, Harry K. Pickett, in command. The marching band makes up one of the twenty-one companies of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets. In 1991, the band participated in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Edinburgh, Scotland becoming the first military college selected for the honor. They returned in 2010 as the only unit from the United States to appear at the Silver Jubilee of the Tattoo and appeared again in 2015.
