PT Adaro Energy Indonesia Tbk is an Indonesian coal mining company, the country's second-largest by production volume and largest by market capitalisation. In the 2023 Forbes Global 2000, Adaro Energy was ranked as the 1393th-largest public company in the world. [1] The company is an Indonesian energy group that focuses on coal mining through subsidiaries. [2] The principal location is at Tabalong district in South Kalimantan, where the subsidiary PT Adaro Indonesia operates the largest single-site coal mine in the southern hemisphere (roughly 110,000 tons of coal per day). [3] Adaro Energy operates under a first-generation CCA (coal co-operation agreement) with the Indonesian Government valid until 2022.

In 2016, Adaro was clearing land in Central Java for a 2,000MW coal plant, after a delay for more than four years due to land acquisition issues. [4] The construction of Indonesia's largest coal plant, into which Adaro invested $4.2 billion, began in June 2016. [5]

Adaro's strategy focuses on power generation as one of its "three pillars", besides coal exports and logistics. [3]

History

In 1976 the Indonesian Mines Department divided East and South Kalimantan into eight coal blocks and invited tenders for these blocks. Spanish state-owned enterprise Enadimsa (empresa nacional adaro investigaciones mineras s.a.) bid for Block 8 in the Tanjung district of South Kalimantan. Adaro Indonesia’s Coal Cooperation Agreement (CCA) was signed on Nov. 2, 1982. In 1989 a consortium of Australian and Indonesian companies purchased 80% of Adaro Indonesia from Enadimsa.

In 2008, Adaro Energy raised $1.3 billion in the country's largest ever initial public offering. [6]

In 2017, the cost of coal rose to 42 percent, and Adaro's revenue were grew to $29.9 million in the first semester of 2017. [7]

In 2019, the total energy production in Indonesia is 450.79 Mtoe, with a total primary energy supply is 231.14 Mtoe and electricity final consumption is 263.32 TWh. Energy use in Indonesia has been long dominated by fossil resources. Once a major oil exporter in the world and joined OPEC in 1962, the country has since become a net oil importer despite still joined OPEC until 2016, making it the only net oil importer member in the organization. Indonesia is also the fourth-largest biggest coal producer and one of the biggest coal exporter in the world, with 24,910 million tons of proven coal reserves as of 2016, making it the 11th country with the most coal reserves in the world. In addition, Indonesia has abundant renewable energy potential, reaching almost 417,8 gigawatt (GW) which consisted of solar, wind, hydro, geothermal energy, ocean current, and bioenergy, although only 2,5% have been utilized. Furthermore, Indonesia along with Malaysia, have two-thirds of ASEAN's gas reserves with total annual gas production of more than 200 billion cubic meters in 2016.

Bumitama Agri Ltd is the Singapore holding company of subsidiary Bumitama Gunajaya Agro. Bumitama is an Indonesian oil palm plantation company which cultivates oil palm trees and produces crude palm oil (CPO). It was established in 1996 by the Harita Group with its first acquisition of land in Central Kalimantan. Bumitama owns roughly 230,000 hectares and has planted 187,000 hectares of oil palm trees, primarily in Central and West Kalimantan. Bumitama owns 14 CPO mills, which produce more than 1,000,000 tons of CPO a year. Primary purchasers of their CPO include Wilmar International, the Sinar Mas Group and Musim Mas. In April 2012, Bumitama Agri presented an IPO on the Singapore Stock Exchange.

The Harita Group is an Indonesian business conglomerate owned and controlled by the Lim family. The group's core businesses are in the natural resources sector, which operates throughout Indonesia. Sexy Killers is a 2019 Indonesian documentary film directed by Dandhy Dwi Laksono and Ucok Suparta about the coal mining industry and its relations with the Indonesian political establishment. The film is a final piece to Laksono's 12-part documentary series Ekspedisi Indonesia Biru which aims to assess economic development and its environmental impact in Indonesia. The producer was Didit Haryo Wicaksono and the film was released by the independent film studio WatchDoc. The film was released on 14 April 2019 ahead of the 2019 Indonesian general election.
