Judith Irene Petts CBE (born 7 January 1954) is a British academic and the Vice-Chancellor of Plymouth University. [1]

Academic career

She graduated from the University of Exeter with a BA in Geography in 1975. She was a research fellow in the Institute for Planning Studies, University of Nottingham and then joined Loughborough University where she completed her PhD in 1996 and became Director of the Centre for Hazard and Risk Management. [2]

In 1998, she became Professor of Environmental Risk Management and later Head of the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham, serving as Pro-Vice-Chancellor 2007–2010. In 2010, she joined the University of Southampton as the Dean of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise.

In February 2016, she was appointed the University of Plymouth’s Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive.

Appointments and honours

Professor Petts served as a member of the Council of NERC 2000–2006 and the NERC Innovation Board 2014–2018. She is an associate of the Centre for Science and Policy at the University of Cambridge. [3] She was a Government advisor as a member of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution (2006–2011) and the Science Advisory Council of Defra (2011–2016). In 2012, she was awarded a CBE for services to scientific research. [4]

Personal life

She was married to Profressor Geoffrey Petts (d. August 2018). [5]

The National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS) is a centre for research, teaching, and technology development in Ocean and Earth science. The UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) is a centre for excellence in environmental science across water, land and air. Paul Curran (geographer)

Sir Paul James Curran is president of City, University of London. He took up his post in August 2010. Following a period of significant progress, City joined the University of London federation in September 2016. He previously served as vice-chancellor of Bournemouth University (2005–10) and deputy vice-chancellor at the University of Southampton, where he is currently a visiting professor. As a member of the senior management team at Southampton, progressing from head of geography to dean of science, Curran was credited with high-profile leadership as head of the Winchester School of Art, part of the University of Southampton.

Judith Rees British academic, educator

Dame Judith Anne Rees,, a distinguished academic geographer, was interim director of London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) from May 2011 until September 2012. Professor Rees also acts as director for both its Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy and the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment.

Kathy Willis British ecologist

Katherine Jane Willis is a biologist, who studies the relationship between long-term ecosystem dynamics and environmental change. She is Professor of Biodiversity in the Department of Zoology, University of Oxford, and an adjunct Professor in Biology at the University of Bergen. In 2018 she was elected as Principal of St Edmund Hall, and took up this position from 1 October. She held the Tasso Leventis Chair of Biodiversity at Oxford and was founding Director, now Associate Director, of the Biodiversity Institute Oxford. Willis was Director of Science at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew from 2013-2018.

Karen Holford Welsh professor

Karen Margaret Holford is a Welsh engineer Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Cardiff University. She is a former Pro Vice-Chancellor of the College of Physical Sciences and Engineering and Head of the School of Engineering. She is an active researcher of acoustic emission and her work has been applied to damage assessment inspections on industrial components.

Professor Louise Heathwaite, CBE FRSE FRSB is a British environmental scientist. She is Distinguished Professor in the Lancaster Environment Centre at Lancaster University and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Research and Enterprise. Judith S. Liebman is an American operations researcher, civil engineer, and mechanical engineer. She is a professor emerita at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and the former and only female president of the Operations Research Society of America.
