List of universities in the United Kingdom by endowment

Last updated

The following is a list of British universities ordered by their financial endowments, expressed in pounds sterling at fair value. All sources are official audited financial statements published in the respective fiscal years. Note that changes to the Financial Reporting Standards (FRS 102) and Statement of Recommended Accounting Practice (SORP) in 2015 mean endowments as of 2016 are not directly comparable in all cases with those for previous years. Notes

  1. During the 2020–21 year, Reading applied for and was granted permission from the Charity Commission to close the Research Endowment Trust. As a result, all of the trust’s assets and liabilities were distributed to the University, the sole Trustee.
  2. The significant fall in the value of Surrey's endowment from 2015 to 2016 is due to the reclassification of the Surrey Research Park to restricted reserves. This was done following legal counsel.

The University of Oxford is a collegiate research university in Oxford, England. There is evidence of teaching as early as 1096, making it the oldest university in the English-speaking world and the world's second-oldest university in continuous operation. It grew rapidly from 1167, when Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris. The two English ancient universities share many common features and are jointly referred to as Oxbridge.

The University of Cambridge is composed of 31 colleges in addition to the academic departments and administration of the central university. Until the mid-19th century, both Cambridge and Oxford comprised a group of colleges with a small central university administration, rather than universities in the common sense. Cambridge's colleges are communities of students, academics and staff – an environment in which generations and academic disciplines are able to mix, with both students and fellows experiencing "the breadth and excellence of a top University at an intimate level".

Generally tutorials and classes are the responsibility of colleges, while lectures, examinations, laboratories, and the central library are run by the university. Students normally have most of their tutorials in their own college, but often have a couple of modules taught at other colleges or even at faculties and departments. Most colleges take both graduates and undergraduates, but several are for graduates only.
