Bob Brown (born December 11,1947) is an American politician who was the Secretary of State for Montana and the Republican nominee for Governor of Montana in 2004. [1] [2]
As a young man,Brown was elected to Montana Legislature. Brown spent four years in the State House (1970–1974) and 23 in the Senate (1975–1997),serving as president from 1995-96. [3] His political mentors include Jean Turnage,who spent 20 years in the Senate and subsequently 15 as chief justice of the Supreme Court before retiring in 1991.
Brown became Senate education chairman in 1977 and served in that capacity through 1983. He served as chairman of the taxation committee in 1987. He became chairman of the committee on committees,one of the most innocuously named but powerful Senate committees,in 1989. He sat on the judicial committee from 1975 to 1993.
In 2000,Brown ran for secretary of state and won by a 7 percent margin. In 2004,Brown entered the 2004 Montana gubernatorial election against Democrat Brian Schweitzer. Although the race was heated,he eventually lost.
He served as a fellow at both the Carol O'Connor Center for the Rocky Mountain West and the Maureen &Mike Mansfield Center at the University of Montana. He is currently retired and sits on the board of the Montana State Historical Society. In the 2016 U.S. presidential election,he endorsed Democratic Party nominee Hillary Clinton. [4] [5]

The 2000 United States Senate elections were held on November 7,2000. The elections coincided with other federal and state elections,including the presidential election which was won by Republican George W. Bush. These elections took place six years after Republicans had won a net gain of eight seats in Senate Class 1. Despite George W. Bush's victory in the presidential election,the GOP lost 4 senate seats,the most a winning president's party has lost since the passage of the 17th amendment. This election marked the first election year since 1990 where Democrats made net gains in the Senate. Democrats defeated incumbent Republicans in Delaware,Michigan,Minnesota,Missouri,and Washington,and they won an open seat in Florida. In Missouri,the winner was elected posthumously. The Republicans defeated a Democratic incumbent in Virginia,and won an open seat in Nevada. Additionally,a Republican in Georgia died earlier in the year and a Democrat was appointed to replace him,who then went on to win the special election.

Clinton won the general election unopposed. His experience as the attorney general was considered a natural "stepping-stone" to the governorship.

Donald Grant Nutter,a former state senator,narrowly won the Republican primary,and advanced to the general election,where he was opposed by Paul Cannon,the Lieutenant Governor of Montana and the Democratic nominee. Nutter defeated Cannon by a fairly wide margin,winning his one and only term as governor,as he would die just a year into his term.
Knute Carl Buehler is an American physician and politician who served as the Oregon State Representative for the 54th district from 2015 until January 2019. He was the Republican nominee for Governor of Oregon in the 2018 election,losing to incumbent Democrat Kate Brown. In 2021,he stated that he had left the Republican Party,citing the state party's response to the 2021 storming of the United States Capitol as his primary motivation. Buehler is no longer registered with any political party.
