Lieutenant General Colin Barry (Born 1974) was a Zambian military officer and commander of the Zambia Air Force from 2021 until December 20, 2023. [1]

Early childhood and education

Barry obtained primary education at Kikombe Primary School in Solwezi and his secondary school education at Solwezi Technical School (SOTECH). While in primary school he joined the Boy's Scouts. [2]

Military career

In 2021, Barry was appointed Commander of the Zambia Air Force by President Hakainde Hichilema. He served until December 20, 2023, when President Hichilema terminated his appointment as Zambia Air Force Commander and appointed Oscar Nyoni as his immediate successor. [3] [4] [5] [6]

He has led the United Party for National Development since 2006 following the death of the party founder Anderson Mazoka.

Starting in January 2024, most of Zambia is experiencing an ongoing drought, considered to be the worst to hit the country in at least two decades, leading to severe food shortages, water scarcity, and a national emergency declaration. The drought is affecting 84 of the 116 districts across Central, Copperbelt, Eastern, Lusaka, Northwestern, Southern, and Western provinces. Triggered by an El Niño-induced dry spell, the drought continues to have profound impacts on agriculture, water supply, and food security, affecting over a million children and households across the nation. Zambia's economy and food security is heavily dependent on rain-fed agriculture, making the country particularly vulnerable to changes in weather patterns. On 29 February 2024, President Hakainde Hichilema declared the drought a national disaster.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2023–2024 Zambian cholera outbreak</span>

The 2023–2024 Zambian cholera outbreak, part of the 2022–2024 Southern Africa cholera outbreak, is currently one of the most severe health crises in the country's recent history, with its origins traced back to January 2023. The outbreak initially surfaced in Vubwi District in the Eastern Province and Mwansabombwe District in Luapula Province. By October 2023, the Zambia National Public Health Institute reported a cholera outbreak in the capital, Lusaka. Cholera cases have so far broken out in 15 districts in five out of the country's 10 provinces, with Lusaka, the country's capital recording the highest number of cases. Of particular concern is the rapid progression of the outbreak within Lusaka, where, within a week, the Ministry of Health reported a surge of 71.2% in cases and a staggering 175% increase in fatalities.
