The journal came into existence in 1993 as an expansion of South Asia Bulletin journal which was established in 1981. [9] In 1993 and 1994, the issues of South Asia Bulletin were published with the sub-title Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa and the Middle East. [10] In 1995, South Asia Bulletin was merged with the journal. [2] [11]

Saba Mahmood (1961–2018) was professor of anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley. At Berkeley, she was also affiliated with the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, Institute for South Asia Studies, and the Program in Critical Theory. Her scholarly work straddled debates in anthropology and political theory, with a focus on Muslim majority societies of the Middle East and South Asia. Mahmood made major theoretical contributions to rethinking the relationship between ethics and politics, religion and secularism, freedom and submission, and reason and embodiment. Influenced by the work of Talal Asad, she wrote on issues of gender, religious politics, secularism, and Muslim and non-Muslim relations in the Middle East.

<i>Asian Survey</i> Bimonthly academic journal of Asian studies

Asian Survey: A Bimonthly Review of Contemporary Asian Affairs is a bimonthly academic journal of Asian studies published by the University of California Press on behalf of the Institute of East Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. The journal was established in 1932 as Memorandum , but was renamed Far Eastern Survey in 1935. The journal acquired its current name in 1961. The journal uses double-blind peer review.

Laleh Khalili is an Iranian American and Professor of International Politics at Queen Mary University of London. She was formerly a Professor of Middle Eastern Politics at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London.

Peter van der Veer is a Dutch academic who is the Director at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity in Göttingen in Germany. He has taught anthropology at the Free University of Amsterdam, Utrecht University and the University of Pennsylvania. Van der Veer works on religion and nationalism in Asia and Europe.

The Journal of Korean Studies is a biannual peer-reviewed academic journal covering Korean studies. It was established in 1969. The original series had two issues numbered Volume 1 (1969) and 2 (1971) that were edited by David Messler. A decade later, James Palais edited and published volumes 1-5 of the second series (1979-1987). Volumes 6-8 (1988-1992) were edited by Mike Robinson.

Tavakoli-Targhi's areas of research include Iranian Studies, Middle Eastern history, Gender Studies, modernity, nationalism, Orientalism, and occidentalism.

Critical Asian Studies is a quarterly peer-reviewed academic journal covering research for understanding the Asia and Pacific regions, the world, and ourselves. It was articulated in 1967 by Committee of Concerned Asian Scholars, a group that coalesced around young scholarly opposition to US involvement in the Vietnam War. From 1968 until 2001 it was published under the name of Bulletin of Concerned Asian Scholars in Asian studies. In the estimation of Fabio Lanza, the journal was at its inception "radical, vibrant, at times excessive, and always politically minded.
