The University of California,San Francisco (UCSF) is a public land-grant research university in San Francisco,California. Michael Ellis DeBakey was an American general and cardiovascular surgeon,scientist and medical educator who became Chairman of the Department of Surgery,President,and Chancellor of Baylor College of Medicine at the Texas Medical Center in Houston,Texas. His career spanned nearly eight decades.
Alfred Blalock was an American surgeon most noted for his work on the medical condition of shock as well as tetralogy of Fallot –commonly known as blue baby syndrome. He created,with assistance from his research and laboratory assistant Vivien Thomas and pediatric cardiologist Helen Taussig,the Blalock–Thomas–Taussig shunt,a surgical procedure to relieve the cyanosis from tetralogy of Fallot. This operation ushered in the modern era of cardiac surgery. He worked at both Vanderbilt University and Johns Hopkins University,where he studied medicine and later served as chief of surgery. He is known as a medical pioneer who won various awards,including Albert Lasker Clinical Medical Research Award. Blalock was also nominated several times for the Nobel Prize in Medicine.
The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health is the public health school of Harvard University,located in the Longwood Medical Area of Boston,Massachusetts. The school grew out of the Harvard-MIT School for Health Officers,the nation's first graduate training program in population health,which was founded in 1913 and then became the Harvard School of Public Health in 1922.
Albany Medical College (AMC) is a private medical school in Albany,New York. It was founded in 1839 by Alden March and James H. Armsby and is one of the oldest medical schools in the nation. The college is part of the Albany Medical Center,which includes the Albany Medical Center Hospital. He is currently an Investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute as well as a James B. Duke Professor of Medicine and Professor of Biochemistry and Chemistry at Duke University.

Asa G. Yancey Sr. was an American physician who is professor emeritus,Emory University School of Medicine and former medical director of the Hughes Spalding Pavilion at Grady Memorial Hospital. Yancey graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta,Georgia. He then went on to college and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Morehouse College in 1937. He received his M.D. from the University of Michigan in 1941 and later studied general surgery under Dr. Charles R. Drew.
The Evans County Heart Study was a long-term cardiovascular study on residents of Evans County,Georgia. The study,which was funded by the National Institute of Health,began in July,1958,and was last updated as recent as May 2016. It resulted in more than 560 published papers that ultimately showed the importance of HDL cholesterol. The study was conducted by Dr. Curtis Gordon Hames,a family doctor from Claxton,Georgia. The study took place in Evans Country because the area had a high death count due to heart complications,such as heart disease and other cardiovascular diseases. The studies showed that there was a significant abundance of heart conditions within a variety of ethnicities. People as young as fourteen and as old as seventy-four participated in the tests,and were divided into different age groups;however only males were eligible for the study. Anyone as old as one-hundred years old could be eligible,and any younger.
Sir Terence Alexander Hawthorne English is a South African-born British retired cardiac surgeon. He was Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon,Papworth Hospital and Addenbrooke's Hospital,Cambridge,1973–1995. After starting a career in mining engineering,English switched to medicine and went on to lead the team that performed Britain's first successful heart transplant in August 1979 at Papworth,and soon established it as one of Europe's leading heart–lung transplant programmes.
Govindan Vijayaraghavan is a cardiologist from India,credited with establishing the first 2D Echocardiography laboratory in India. He is the vice-chairman &Founder Director of the Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences and the President of the Society for Continuing Medical Education and Research,Trivandrum,Kerala. He was honoured by Government of India in 2009 for his services in the field of medical sciences by awarding him Padmashri.
Charles DeWitt Watts was an African-American surgeon and activist for the poor. Watts was the first surgeon of African-American ancestry in North Carolina. Earning his medical degree in 1943 from Howard University College,he was the first African-American board-certified surgeon to serve in North Carolina. After surgical training at Freedman's Hospital in Washington,D.C.,in 1949,he moved to Durham,North Carolina,in 1950 and established a clinic to provide access to medical services for the poor. Breaking the social customs of racial obstacles,he advocated for certification of African-American medical students. He also became a member of many professional colleges including the National Academy of Science's Institute of Medicine and the American College of Surgeons. He served as chief of surgery at Durham's Lincoln Hospital and was later one of the key figures in converting it to the Lincoln Community Health Center,a low-priced clinic for the poor.
Tejas M. Patel is a cardiologist from Ahmedabad,India and chairman and chief interventional cardiologist at Apex Heart Institute,Ahmedabad. Patel,a recipient of the Dr. B. C. Roy Award,the highest Indian medical award,was honoured by the Government of India in 2015 with Padma Shri,the fourth highest Indian civilian award.
Nagarur Gopinath was an Indian surgeon and one of the pioneers of cardiothoracic surgery in India. He is credited with the first successful performance of open heart surgery in India which he performed in 1962. He served as the honorary surgeon to two Presidents of India and was a recipient of the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri in 1974 and Dr. B. C. Roy Award,the highest Indian medical award in 1978 from the Government of India.
Gurumukh Sajanmal Sainani is an Indian general physician,medical researcher,medical writer and an Emeritus Professor of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. He is a former director of the All India Heart Foundation and the incumbent director of Jaslok Hospital,Mumbai. He is a recipient of the highest Indian award in the medical category,Dr. B. C. Roy Award,from the Medical Council of India and the rank of Honorary Brigadier from the President of India. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian award of the Padma Shri in 2000.
William A. Zoghbi is a Lebanese-American cardiologist. He is Professor of Medicine at the Houston Methodist Institute for Academic Medicine,in Houston Texas,and Weill Cornell Medical College. He holds the Elkins Family Distinguished Chair in Cardiac Health at the Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart &Vascular Center. Zoghbi is the Chairman of the Department of Cardiology at Houston Methodist Hospital. He is a Master of the American College of Cardiology and served as its president in 2012.
Harriet Pearson Dustan (1920–1999) was an American physician who is known for her pioneering contributions to effective detection and treatment of hypertension. She was the first woman to serve on the Board of Governors of the American Board of Internal Medicine.
