Des Raj Dhugga is an Indian politician and belongs to the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal. He was a member of Punjab Legislative Assembly and represented Sri Hargobindpur. [1] [2]

Political career

Dhugga first became a member of Punjab Legislative Assembly on the Congress ticket from Garhdiwala in 2002, which was reserved for candidates belonging to scheduled castes. [4] He retained his seat in the 2007 Vidhan Sabha elections. [5] In 2012 Garhdiwala underwent Boundary delimitation and Sri Hargobindpur was converted from general category seat to a reserve category seat. [6] Dhugga successfully contested from Sri Hargobindpur in 2012. [1] He was made chief parliamentary secretary in 2007 Badal government. He continued on this position after the 2012 Punjab elections and was given the department of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries. [7] [8]

In 2021 he joined the Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt) and then become the President of its SC wing. [9]

Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa is a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India. He is the President of Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt) political party, which is formed by the merger of Shiromani Akali Dal (Democratic) and Shiromani Akali Dal (Taksali) lead by him and Ranjit Singh Brahampura respectively. He used to be a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) political party until tensions rose inside the SAD Political Party. Dhindsa started his political journey as an active student leader during his graduation years at Govt. Ranbir College Sangrur. He was the first elected Secretary of Ranbir College Students' Council and subsequently elected as the president of council too. In 1972 Dhindsa won Dhanaula Assembly Constituency seat as an independent candidate and later joined Shiromani Akali Dal under the guidance and motivation of Sant Harchand Singh Longowal. He again was elected as an MLA from Sunam on Shiromani Akali Dal ticket and inducted as Minister of State holding the portfolios of Transport, Sports, Tourism, Cultural Affairs and Civil Aviation. In 1980 he again was re elected to Punjab Vidhan Sabha from Sangrur seat. In 1985 he became MLA from Sunam. Later in 1986, differences brew in Surjit Singh Barnala's Government on the issue of Operation Black Thunder and Dhindsa choose to go with the faction of Parkash Singh Badal in retaliation to operation black thunder. He was previously a member of 14th Lok Sabha of India, representing the Sangrur constituency of Punjab. He has been awarded the Padma Bhushan in the awards list of 26 January 2019. However, he returned it in December 2020 during the farmer protests.

Politics in reorganised present-day Punjab is dominated by mainly three parties – Aam Aadmi Party, Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) and Indian National Congress. Since 1967, Chief Minister of Punjab has been predominantly from Jatt Sikh community despite its 21 percent state population. Only exception was Giani Zail Singh, the Chief Minister of Punjab from 17 March 1972 to 30 April 1977 belonging to Ramgarhia community that has population of 6 percent and is a part of significant OBC community having population of 31.3 percent in the state. However Scheduled Castes (Dalit) community never had Chief Minister from community nor proper representation in Government, despite having 32 percent population in the state. Other prominent party is Bahujan Samaj Party especially in Doaba region founded by Kanshi Ram of Rupnagar district. In 1992 BSP won 9 seats Vidhan Sabha elections. Also BSP won 3 lok sabha seats from Punjab in 1996 general elections and only Garhshanker seat in 1997 Vidhan Sabha elections. Communist parties too have some influence in the Malwa area. In the 2014 general elections, the first-time contesting Aam Aadmi Party got 4 out of 13 seats in Punjab by winning 34 of the total 117 assembly segments, coming second in 7, third in 73 and fourth in the rest 3 segments. The support for the Aam Aadmi Party increased later in Punjab. The current Government was elected in the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections and the Congress won 77 out of 117 Assembly seats with Captain Amarinder Singh as the current Chief Minister. The AAP, fighting its first assembly election in the state, won 20 seats. The incumbent BJP-SAD alliance came third with 18 seats.

Gurnam Singh Indian politician

Gurnam Singh was an Indian politician and the Chief Minister of Punjab from 8 March 1967 to 25 November 1967, and again between 17 February 1969 to 27 March 1970. He was the first Shiromani Akali Dal Chief minister of Punjab. His ministry fell due to defection of Lachhman Singh Gill, who became the next Chief Minister with the support of the Indian National Congress. He died in an air crash in Delhi on 31 May 1973.

Parkash Singh Badal Indian politician

Parkash Singh Badal is an Indian politician who was Chief Minister of Punjab state from 1970 to 1971, from 1977 to 1980, from 1997 to 2002, and from 2007 to 2017. He is also the patron of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), a Sikh-centered regional political party. He was the president of the party from 1995 to 2008, when he was replaced by his son Sukhbir Singh Badal. As the patron of SAD he exercises a strong influence on the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee. The Government of India awarded him the second-highest civilian award, Padma Vibhushan, in 2015.

Sukhbir Singh Badal Indian politician

Sukhbir Singh Badal is an Indian politician and President of Shiromani Akali Dal, and is currently a member of Parliament from the Ferozpur. He served as Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab from 2009 to 2017. He is the son of Parkash Singh Badal, who has served several times as Chief Minister of Punjab.

Shiromani Akali Dal (Taksali) was an Indian political party which was formed by Ranjit Singh Brahmpura, Rattan Singh Ajnala and Sewa Singh Sekhwan on 16 December 2018. On 4 November 2018, Shiromani Akali Dal expelled Sewa Singh Sekhwan the former Punjab Minister and then on 12 November 2018 expelled Ranjit Singh Brahmpura MP from Khadoor Sahib, Rattan Singh Ajnala former MP, Ravinder Singh Brahmpura and Amarpal Singh Ajnala from the party.

Dilraj Singh Bhunder Indian politician

Dilraj Singh Bhunder is an Indian politician, currently a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly or the Punjab Vidhan Sabha. He is the son of Sardar Balwinder Singh Bhunder, who is currently a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India, from the state of Punjab. Dilraj is a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal party. He is a former Vice President of Youth Wing Shiromani Akali Dal party. Dilraj is an engineering graduate from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh.
