Douglas Allan Girod (born May 5,1958) is an American educator,medical doctor,and the 18th University of Kansas chancellor. [1] Prior to becoming chancellor,he was the University of Kansas Medical Center's executive vice chancellor,a position he had held since February 2013. [2] Before being promoted to the executive vice chancellor at the University of Kansas Medical Center,Girod was the senior dean for the School of Medicine while dually serving as a surgeon at the University of Kansas Health System where he began his career in 1994. He is also a veteran of the United States Navy Reserve. [3]
Born and raised in Salem,Oregon,Girod graduated from the University of California,Davis with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry,followed by University of California,San Francisco for his doctor of medicine,and completed his residency and an National Institute of Health research fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle. [4]
Beginning in 1982,Girod began his 15-year career in the United States Navy Reserve where he worked at the Naval Hospital Oakland as a surgeon and the Director of Otolaryngology. In 1997,Girod was discharged from the military honorably,ending his career as a Lieutenant Commander. [5] In 1994,Girod left California to become a surgeon at the KU Medical Center. [6] During his time at the KU Medical Center,Girod was a professor,department chair,senior associate dean,interim executive dean,and his most recent post of executive vice chancellor. [7] He's a member of the Republican Party. [8]
On May 25,2017,the Kansas Board of Regents announced Girod as the 18th chancellor of the University of Kansas. [9] During his time as chancellor,Girod has increased the university's enrollment, [10] established a partnership between Kansas Athletics,the University of Kansas Health System and Lawrence Memorial Health to create Kansas Team Health,a model that provides better care for student athletes and moved all healthcare professionals under the Kansas Health System's payroll. [11]
A year into being chancellor,Girod fired athletic director Sheahon Zenger due to a lack of progress. [12] Almost a month later,Girod hired Jeff Long as the new athletics director,tasking him to fix the football program. [13] Long fired David Beaty at the end of the 2018 football season,ending with a 6–42 record at Kansas. [14] Long then hired Les Miles to get the football program to become a championship program,however,he was fired on March 9,2021,after accusations from women while he was at LSU. [15] The next day,Girod fired Long as the athletics director. [16]
In April 2021,Girod hired Travis Goff as the new athletics director,whose first task was to hire a new football coach. [17] Almost a month later,Goff named Lance Leipold as the next football coach. [18] Leipold,in just his second season,led the Jayhawks to a 5–0 start for the first time since 2008 and also coached the team to be bowl-eligible for the first time since 2008. [19]
Girod is married to Susan Pirtle and they have three children. Girod and his wife live in Lawrence,Kansas. [20]
The University of Kansas (KU) is a public research university with its main campus in Lawrence,Kansas. David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium is a football stadium located in Lawrence,Kansas,on the campus of the University of Kansas. The stadium was opened in 1921,and is the seventh oldest college football stadium in the country,and is widely recognized as the oldest west of the Mississippi River. Nicknamed "The Booth",the stadium is dedicated as a memorial to Kansas students who died in World War I,and is one of seven major veterans' memorials on the campus. The stadium is at the center of all seven war memorials - adjacent to the stadium,further up the hill is a Korean War memorial honoring Kansas students who served,just a few hundred feet south of the stadium stands the University of Kansas World War II Memorial,the Kansas Memorial Campanile and Carillon,the University of Kansas Vietnam War Memorial sits adjacent to the Campanile to the west,the Victory Eagle - World War I statue located on Jayhawk Boulevard,southeast of the stadium,and the Kansas Memorial Union,a veterans' memorial that also houses the main university student union and bookstore,located east of the stadium. The stadium is the home stadium of the Kansas Jayhawks football team.
The Kansas Jayhawks,commonly referred to as simply KU or Kansas,are the athletic teams that represent the University of Kansas. KU is one of three schools in the state of Kansas that participate in NCAA Division I. The Jayhawks are also a member of the Big 12 Conference. KU athletic teams have won twelve NCAA Division I championships:four in men's basketball,one in men's cross country,three in men's indoor track and field,three in men's outdoor track and field,and one in women's outdoor track and field. KU basketball also has two Helms Foundation National Titles.
Mark Thomas Mangino is a former American football coach. He served as the head football coach at the University of Kansas from 2002 to 2009. In 2007,Mangino received several national coach of the year honors after leading the Jayhawks to their only 12-win season in school history and an Orange Bowl victory. However,he resigned as coach at Kansas two seasons later following allegations of mistreatment of players. While at Kansas,Mangino coached in four bowl games with a 3–1 record,the lone loss coming in the 2003 Tangerine Bowl. Additionally,in five of his eight seasons at Kansas,the Jayhawks were Bowl eligible,they were only bowl eligible five times in the previous thirty seasons. He held multiple assistant coaching jobs before becoming the head coach at Kansas,the longest being an eight season stint at Kansas State as their running game coordinator.
Bob Valesente is a former American football player and coach. He played college football at Ithaca College and spent more than 35 years as a football coach. He was the head coach of the Kansas Jayhawks football team from 1986 to 1987 and has also served as an assistant football coach in the National Football League with multiple teams.

He is the former Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics at the University of Arkansas and joined the University in 2008 after holding the same position at the University of Pittsburgh. Lance Leipold is an American college football coach who has been the head football coach at the University of Kansas since 2021. Leipold served as the head football coach at the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater (UWW) from 2007 to 2014 and at University at Buffalo from 2015 to 2020. During his tenure at UWW,the Wisconsin–Whitewater Warhawks won the NCAA Division III Football Championship in 2007,2009,2010,2011,2013,and 2014 and were runners-up in 2008. During his time at Wisconsin-Whitewater,Leipold led the Warhawks to 5 undefeated seasons.
Sheahon Jay Zenger is an American university sports administrator and former assistant American football coach. Zenger serves as the interim president for the University of New Haven,a position he has held since July 2022. He previously served as the athletic director at the University of New Haven. He was fired from his role as the athletic director at the University of Kansas in 2018 where he had served since 2011,and Illinois State University.
The history of the University of Kansas can be traced back to 1855,when efforts were begun to establish a "University of the Territory of Kansas." Nine years later in 1864,together with the help of Amos Adams Lawrence,former Kansas Governor Charles L. Robinson,and several other prominent figures,the Kansas Legislature chartered the University of Kansas in Lawrence,Kansas. The university was initially funded by a $15,000 endowment on a 40-acre (160,000 m2) allotment of land from Charles Robinson and his wife Sara. The university commenced preparatory-level classes in 1866 and college-level classes in 1869.

Robert David Simari is an American educator,medical doctor,and 10th executive vice chancellor of the University of Kansas Medical Center. Prior to becoming the executive vice chancellor,he was the executive dean University of Kansas School of Medicine,a position he held from 2014 to 2019. Prior to returning to his alma mater,Simari served as a professor in cardiology among other roles,at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
