The Electronic Entertainment Expo 2013 (E3 2013) was the 19th E3 held. The event took place at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California with many press conferences taking place at nearby venues including the Nokia Theater, Galen Center, and the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena. It began on June 11, 2013, and ended on June 13, 2013, with 48,200 total attendees. [1]

Contents

The main highlights included details of two major next-generation consoles, Microsoft's Xbox One and Sony's PlayStation 4, as well as Nintendo's unveilings of Super Mario 3D World , Mario Kart 8 , and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U . [2] [3]

Press conferences

Konami, Microsoft, Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, and Sony all hosted press conferences during the conference. [4] However, Nintendo took a different approach by holding no traditional press conference. Instead, Nintendo held "a few smaller events that are specifically focused on our software lineup", and aired a special episode of Nintendo Direct to focus on upcoming U.S. releases and new game unveilings. [5]

Konami

Konami held its 3rd annual pre-E3 show on June 6. The presentation showcased the company's 40th anniversary and its Dance Dance Revolution: Classroom Edition initiative, before providing updates on upcoming game releases. This included the games Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 , Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain . [6]

Microsoft

Microsoft's press conference took place on June 10 at the Galen Center at 9:30am. The company announced a November 2013 release date for its forthcoming Xbox One console, priced at $499. [7] The software lineup was also revealed, including Dead Rising 3 , Quantum Break , Ryse: Son of Rome and the next installment of Halo , [8] later revealed to be Halo 5: Guardians.

Controversy arose during Microsoft's showcase of Killer Instinct when an apparent reference to rape was made between the on-stage demonstrators. Microsoft later apologized for the incident and stated that the remarks were not scripted. [9] [10]

Electronic Arts

Electronic Arts' press conference took place on June 10 at the Nokia Theater at 1:00pm. Among the new titles shown were the racing game Need for Speed: Rivals , the parkour simulator Mirror's Edge Catalyst and the first-person shooters Battlefield 4 and Titanfall . EA Sports announced a number of new releases, such as Madden NFL 25 , NBA Live 14 , FIFA 14 , NHL 14 and EA Sports UFC . [11]

Ubisoft

Ubisoft's press conference took place on June 10 at 3:00pm. Upcoming action-adventure games included Watch Dogs and the sequels Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist . [12] Two new franchises – The Crew and The Division – were also announced.

Sony

Sony's press conference took place on June 10 at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena at 6:00pm. The PlayStation 4 was publicly shown for the first time, retailing at $399. [13] The software lineup included Infamous: Second Son , The Order: 1886 , Driveclub , Final Fantasy XV and Killzone: Shadow Fall . There were also new games introduced for the PlayStation 3, such as Gran Turismo 6 , Beyond: Two Souls and The Last of Us . [14]

Nintendo

The E3 edition of Nintendo Direct aired at June 11 at 7:00am. Nintendo first showed a new trailer for the Nintendo 3DS titles Pokémon X and Y, including the announcement of a new Pokémon type, Fairy Type. After that, Nintendo focused mostly on showing upcoming Wii U titles. Nintendo showed some of the third-party and digital titles coming to the Wii U, and more about previously announced games such as X , The Wonderful 101 , The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD , and the first gameplay footage of Bayonetta 2 . Among the new games announced for Wii U were the new installments of Super Smash Bros. , Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U , Super Mario 3D World , Mario Kart 8 , and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze .

The GameCube is a home video game console developed and marketed by Nintendo. <i>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</i> 2008 fighting video game

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a 2008 crossover fighting game developed by Sora Ltd. and Game Arts and published by Nintendo for the Wii. The third installment in the Super Smash Bros. series, it was announced at a pre-E3 2005 press conference by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata. Masahiro Sakurai, director of the previous two games in the series, assumed the role of director at Iwata's request. Game development began in October 2005 with a creative team that included members from several Nintendo and third-party development teams. After delays due to development problems, the game was released worldwide in 2008.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">GameCube controller</span> Primary game controller for the Nintendo GameCube

The GameCube controller is the standard game controller for the GameCube home video game console, manufactured by Nintendo and launched in 2001. As the successor to the Nintendo 64 controller, it is the progression of Nintendo's controller design in numerous ways. The contentious M-shaped design of its predecessor was replaced with a more conventional handlebar style controller shape; a second analog stick was added, replacing the C buttons with a C stick and the X and Y face buttons, last seen on the Super Nintendo controller, were reintroduced; the shoulder buttons were changed to hybrid analog triggers. A wireless variant of the GameCube controller known as the WaveBird was released in 2002.

<i>Wii Sports Resort</i> 2009 sports video game published by Nintendo

Wii Sports Resort is a 2009 sports simulation video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Wii video game console and is the sequel to Wii Sports. It is the first first-party Wii game to support the Wii MotionPlus accessory and the first one overall to require it, which was bundled with the game. Wii Sports Resort was first announced at E3 2008 and was released in Japan on June 25, 2009, and in nearly all other regions the following month. While Wii Sports Resort was first released as a stand-alone title, it was later bundled with newer Wii consoles alongside Wii Sports.

The Electronic Entertainment Expo 2012 was the 18th E3 held. The event took place at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California. It began on June 5, 2012, and ended on June 7, 2012, with 45,700 total attendees. It was televised on Spike and streamed online to computers, mobile devices, PlayStation Home and on Xbox Live via IGN's application. This was the last event to be broadcast by G4 along with being the last one to feature a physical press conference by Nintendo which mainly focused on games that were coming to the then upcoming Wii U video game console that launched later that year and was later considered to be a commercial failure.

Nintendo Direct is a series of online presentations or live shows produced by Nintendo, where information regarding the company's upcoming content or franchises is presented, such as information about games and consoles. The presentations began in Japan and North America with the first edition on October 21, 2011, before later expanding to Europe, Australia, and South Korea.

<i>Super Smash Bros. Ultimate</i> 2018 crossover fighting game

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a 2018 crossover fighting game developed by Bandai Namco Studios and Sora Ltd. and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It is the fifth installment in the Super Smash Bros. series, succeeding Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U (2014). The game follows the series' traditional style of gameplay, in which players control one of the various characters and use attacks to weaken their opponents and knock them out of an arena. It features a wide variety of game modes, including a single-player campaign and multiplayer versus modes. Ultimate features 89 playable fighters, including all characters from previous Super Smash Bros. games as well as newcomers. The roster ranges from Nintendo characters to those from third-party franchises.
