Eleanor Elizabeth "Ellie" Chowns (born 7 March 1975) is a British politician of the Green Party of England and Wales,serving as the party's housing and communities spokesperson. [3] She served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the West Midlands for the party from 2019 to 2020. [4] She has been a councillor on Herefordshire Council since 2017,representing the Bishops Frome &Cradley ward,and is leader of the council's Green group. [5] She is also contesting the seat of North Herefordshire as the Green Party PPC at the 2024 United Kingdom general election.
Chowns studied geography,environmental studies,and development studies at the University of Sussex,graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in 1997. She then undertook a one-year Master of Professional Studies (MProf) degree in sustainable development at the University of Middlesex,graduating in 1998. She later undertook doctoral research in international development at the University of Birmingham. She completed her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in 2014,with a doctoral thesis titled "The political economy of community management:a study of factors influencing sustainability in Malawi's rural water supply sector". She is a specialist in international development,having worked for charities such as Voluntary Service Overseas and Christian Aid and as a lecturer at the University of Birmingham. [6]
Chowns got involved in politics in 2015. [8] In 2017 she was elected as a councillor on Herefordshire Council,and became the leader of the Green group. She also stood in the general election in North Herefordshire,securing 5.5% of the vote.
In May 2019,Chowns was re-elected onto the Herefordshire Council,with 78.6% of the vote. Later in the month,Chowns was subsequently elected as an MEP in the 2019 European elections,winning 10.66% of the vote share. In the same election,the Green Party won 7 MEPs,up from 3.
Chowns stood as the Green candidate for North Herefordshire,a safe Conservative seat,in the December 2019 parliamentary election. She won 9.3% of the vote share,the 6th highest Green vote share in the country and the highest of any seat where there was no Unite to Remain alliance. [9]
Chowns was arrested on 14 October 2019 in Trafalgar Square defending the rights of Extinction Rebellion protesters to continue. She was released pending investigation, [10] and later was one of the claimants to challenge the legality of the Section 14 order under which she was arrested. On 6 November 2019 the High Court ruled this blanket use of Section 14 by the Metropolitan Police was unlawful. [11] Chowns declined to sue the Metropolitan Police for unlawful arrest,but declared the ruling to be a "victory for the right to peaceful assembly and protest,two cornerstones of our democracy". [12]
Chowns is a member of Giving What We Can,a community of people who have pledged to give at least 10% of their income to effective charities. [13]
The Green Party of England and Wales is a green, left-wing political party in England and Wales. Since October 2021, Carla Denyer and Adrian Ramsay have served as the party's co-leaders. The party currently has one representative in the House of Commons and two in the House of Lords, in addition to over 800 councillors at the local government level and three members of the London Assembly.
The Scottish Greens are a green political party in Scotland. The party has seven MSPs in the Scottish Parliament as of May 2021. As of the 2022 local elections, the party sits on 13 of the 32 Scottish local councils, with a total of 36 councillors. They held two ministerial posts in the first Yousaf government following a power-sharing agreement with the SNP from August 2021 until the end of the Bute House Agreement in April 2024, marking the first time Green Party politicians formed part of a government in the UK.
Caroline Patricia Lucas is a British politician who has twice led the Green Party of England and Wales and was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Brighton Pavilion from the 2010 general election until 2024. She was re-elected in the 2015, 2017 and 2019 general elections, increasing her majority each time. She is the Green Party's first and only MP.

West Midlands was a constituency of the European Parliament. It was represented by seven MEPs using the D'Hondt method of party-list proportional representation. In 2009, the constituency was reduced to six seats, but also elected a "virtual MEP" who took her seat in the Parliament when the Treaty of Lisbon came into effect. The constituency was represented by seven MEPs prior to the 2009 election, until the UK exit from the European Union on 31 January 2020.
Jonathan Charles Bartley is a British politician and was a co-leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, a position he shared with Caroline Lucas from 2016 to 2018, and then, from 2018 to 2021, with Siân Berry. He was the Green Party's national Work and Pensions spokesperson and the party's Parliamentary candidate for Streatham in the 2015 general election. He was the Unite to Remain candidate for Dulwich and West Norwood at the 2019 general election.
Sarah Margaret "Molly" Scott Cato is a British Green politician, economist and activist. She served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for South West England from 2014 to 2020. From 2012, until her election as an MEP, she was Professor of Strategy and Sustainability at the University of Roehampton. Scott Cato speaks for the Green Party on finance and the EU, and is known for her work in the field of co-operative studies. She has published on green economics, localism and anti-capitalism, and has contributed to works on the risks of nuclear power, the use of which she strongly opposes.
Nicole Sinclaire is a British former politician who was leader of the We Demand a Referendum Party, and served as a Member of the European Parliament for the West Midlands from 2009 to 2014.
Phillip Bennion is a British Liberal Democrat politician. He served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the West Midlands from 2012 to 2014, and then from 2019 to 2020.
William Milroy Etheridge is an English politician who was previously a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the West Midlands region. He was elected in 2014 as a UK Independence Party (UKIP) candidate, but left the party in October 2018 and joined the Libertarian Party. He joined the Brexit Party in 2019 but rejoined UKIP in September 2020.
Salma Yaqoob is a British political activist and psychotherapist who served as the Leader of the Respect Party from 2005 until 2012, representing the party on Birmingham City Council.
The 2019 European Parliament election was the United Kingdom's component of the 2019 European Parliament election. It was held on Thursday 23 May 2019 and the results announced on Sunday 26 and Monday 27 May 2019, after all the other EU countries had voted. This was the United Kingdom's final participation in a European Parliament election before leaving the European Union on 31 January 2020, and was also the last election to be held under the provisions of the European Parliamentary Elections Act 2002 before its repeal under the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018.

Carla Suzanne Denyer is a British politician who has served as co-leader of the Green Party of England and Wales alongside Adrian Ramsay since 1 October 2021. She was a city councillor in Bristol from 2015 to 2024. She is also noted for her lead role in bringing about Bristol City Council's declaration of a climate emergency in 2018, which was the first in Europe.
