Emi Omo Eso

Emi Omo Eso is the name ascribed to the moral code of the Eso Ikoyi warrior caste of the Yorubas of West Africa. Its literal translation is I am the child of an Eso.

History

Following the establishment of the cavalry division of the imperial army of Old Oyo in about the 17th century, the dynasties of Eso chieftains that developed out of it in the metropolitan town of Ikoyi became famous over time for a manner of conduct that came to be synonymous with the noble titleholders themselves.

Eventually coming to describe the proper behaviour of both the Esos and their numerous lineal heirs, the code was encapsulated in a series of proverbs that were passed down through the generations of the Eso families, proverbs which served by way of tradition as mnemonic devices. [1]

Proverbs

The proverbs that make up the body of the Emi Omo Eso philosophical credo include the following:

Ohun meji l'o ye Eso
Eso ja O le ogun
Eso ja O ku si ogun.

One of two things befits an Eso: The Eso must fight and conquer or the Eso must fight and perish.

Eso ki igba Ofa lehin
Afi bi o ba gbogbe niwaju gangan.

An Eso must never be shot in the back, his wounds must always be right in front.

Alakoro ki isa ogun.

One that wears a coronet must never flee in battle.

Affirmation

Emi Omo Eso also affected the succeeding generations of Eso heirs. Following the disbanding of the cavalry itself in the 19th century, the children and grandchildren of its former members began to use its name as an affirmation in a manner similar to the usage of the Latin dictum infra dignitatem. Seeing as how a classical Eso was both traditionally obligated and widely considered to be noble in both word and deed, stating that you were a descendant of such a personage was seen within this culture as a means of subconsciously causing yourself to live up to his legacy. The phrase therefore could variously symbolize your contempt for anything mean or low, or your scorn for difficulty, danger or - potentially - death itself. By stating that you were a child of an Eso, you were effectively declaring that you knew no fear, or that a particular thing was beneath your dignity. [2]

Oduduwa

Oduduwa was a Yoruba divine king. According to tradition he was the holder of the title of the Ooni of Ile-Ife, the Yoruba holy city. He was not only the first ruler of a unified Ife, but also the progenitor of various independent royal dynasties in Yorubaland and ancestor of their numerous crowned kings.. His name, phonetically written by Yoruba language-speakers as Odùduwà and sometimes contracted as Ooduwa, Odudua or Oòdua is today venerated as "the hero, the warrior, the leader and father of the Yoruba race". For a long time as propagated by early writers of Yoruba history, like the Bayajidda legend of the Hausa people, he was said to be an Eastern prince whose people were driven out of their kingdom in Mecca in Arabia and were forced to migrate in a long march to present day south western Nigeria, though this belief is now thought to reflect later Islamic influences. Through a war lasting many years, Oduduwa was able to defeat the forces of the 13 indigenous communities of Ife led by Obatala and formed these communities into a single Ife unit.

Ifá is a Yoruba religion and system of divination. Its literary corpus is the Odu Ifá. Orunmila is identified as the Grand Priest, as he is who revealed divinity and prophecy to the world. Babalawos or Iyanifas use either the divining chain known as Opele, or the sacred palm or kola nuts called Ikin, on the wooden divination tray called Opon Ifá.

The Yoruba religion comprises the traditional religious and spiritual concepts and practice of the Yoruba tribe. Its homeland is in present-day Southwestern Nigeria which comprised Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, and Kwara as well as Lagos States, parts of Kogi state and the adjoining parts of Benin and Togo, commonly known as Yorubaland. It shares some parallels with the Vodun practiced by the neighboring Fon and Ewe peoples to the west and to the religion of the Edo people to the east. Death and the King's Horseman is a play by Wole Soyinka based on a real incident that took place in Nigeria during British colonial rule: the horseman of a Yoruba King was prevented from committing ritual suicide by the colonial authorities. In addition to the British intervention, Soyinka calls the horseman's own conviction toward suicide into question, posing a problem that throws off the community's balance.

Oyo Empire Former empire in present-day Benin and Nigeria

The Oyo Empire was a Yoruba empire of what is today Benin and Western Nigeria. The Oyo Empire grew to become the largest Yoruba state. It rose through the outstanding organizational and administrative skills of the Yoruba people, wealth gained from trade and its powerful cavalry. The Oyo Empire was one of the most politically important states in the entirety of Western Africa from the mid-7th to the late 18th century, holding sway not only over most of the other kingdoms in Yorubaland, but also over nearby African states, notably the Fon Kingdom of Dahomey in the modern Republic of Benin to the west.

Ilesa is a city located in the Osun State, south west Nigeria; it is also the name of a historic kingdom centered on that city. The state is ruled by a monarch bearing the title of the Owa Obokun Adimula of Ijesaland. The state of Ilesa consisted of Ilesa itself and a number of smaller surrounding cities.

Ilaro, Ogun State is a town in Ogun State, Nigeria. Ilaro town houses about 57,850 people. Abass Akande Obesere, also known as Omo Rapala, is a native of Ibadan, the largest city in Western Nigeria. A popular Fuji musician, Obesere forced his way into the limelight through his "vulgar" songs, which openly touch on issues that are considered taboo in the conservative Yoruba community. Following the paths of other successful musicians such as Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, Obesere also has taken his own brand of Fuji music all over the world. He was initially signed with Sony Music but moved onto other labels after payment disputes. He is currently signed with Mayors Ville Entertainment an artiste management firm, a subsidiary of Maxgolan Entertainment Group, a record company located in Lagos, Nigeria.

Funke Akindele Nigerian actress and producer

Akindele-Bello Olufunke Ayotunde is a Nigerian actress and producer. Funke starred in the sitcom I Need to Know from 1998 to 2002, and in 2009 she won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. She plays the lead character in the show Jenifa's Diary, for which she was named Best Actress in a Comedy at the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards.

Egba Ake Traditional state in Ogun State, Nigeria

Egba Ake, otherwise known as Egba Alake, is one of the five sections of Egbaland, the others being Oke-Ona, Gbagura, the Owu and Ibara. It is a traditional state which joins with its bordering sections to form something of a high kingship. The Alake of Abeokuta, or Alake of Egbaland, is the traditional ruler of the Egba clan of Yoruba in the city of Abeokuta in southwestern Nigeria.

The Gods Are Not To Blame is a 1968 play and a 1971 novel by Ola Rotimi. An adaptation of the Greek classic Oedipus Rex, the story centres on Odewale, who is lured into a false sense of security, only to somehow get caught up in a somewhat consanguineous trail of events by the gods of the land.

Eso Ikoyi is an aristocratic attribute amongst the Yoruba people which denotes an eminent warrior. It has been used as everything from a chieftaincy title to a part of praise poetry.

Iyami Aje is a Yoruba term of respect and endearment used to describe a woman of African ancestry who is considered to be an Aje, a woman who wields myriad arcane creative biological, spiritual, and cosmic powers.

The Nigerian Chieftaincy is the chieftaincy system that is native to Nigeria. Consisting of everything from the country's monarchs to its titled family elders, the chieftaincy as a whole is one of the oldest continuously existing institutions in Nigeria and is legally recognized by its government.

The Oyo Mesi is the privy council of Oyo, a Yoruba traditional state in Southwestern Nigeria. It dates to the medieval period, when it served as the government of a powerful pre-colonial state that was known as the Oyo empire.
