The Global Environmental Citizen Award is an environmental award created by the Harvard Medical School Center for Health and the Global Environment and bestowed annually upon an individual working to restore and protect the global environment. [1]
In 2003, primatologist Jane Goodall received Harvard's annual Global Environmental Citizen Award. Goodall founded a program called "Take Care", aimed at creating microcredit banks and educating conservation methods to inhabitants near the forest and national park. [2]
In 2004, the award was given to journalist Bill Moyers who has created discussion around the relation between the environment and various political trends, such as the discourse between environmental policy and religious right. [3] Moyers's acceptance made a connection between the rising Christian fundamentalism movement and environmental policies of the post-Columbine era. [3]
Al Gore, the 45th Vice President of the United States, was the 2005 award recipient. [4] Al Gore has long voiced his interests in the role of technology in environmental issues—from biomedical and genetic engineering to the socio-ecological effects of greenhouse gases. [5]
In 2007, Charles, Prince of Wales, (now King Charles III), was presented with the Global Environmental Citizen Award for his work towards preserving the environment. [6] In 1990, Prince Charles started Duchy Originals, a company dedicated to providing small farmers new markets to sell their goods and delivering high-quality organic goods through more sustainable production methods. [4] Since then, Duchy Originals has rapidly grown to profit more than £1 million annually, becoming one of the most well-known and prosperous natural brands in the United Kingdom. [4] For decades, the prince has voiced concerns about the dangerous risks of genetically modified foods, advocated for research into chemical farming and its effects on human health, launched numerous development projects in rural communities, and fostered corporate responsibility toward the environment. [4] The prince has actively called for the improvement of energy efficiency and reduction of toxic discharge. [7] In his award speech, he addressed the role of the British government in recognizing climate change as an utmost global priority. [6]
In 2008, Kofi Annan and Alice Waters received the award for their contributions to sustainable living and agricultural production. [8] Annan has led the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment as Secretary-General of the United Nations, served as the President of the Global Humanitarian Forum and now serves as Chair of the Alliance for Africa's Green Revolution. [8] Waters, founder of Chez Panisse Foundation, has established an organic classroom, the Edible Schoolyard in Berkeley, California, providing a space for students of all ages to tend land, harvest their crops and prepare food fresh from the garden. [8] As a chef, she has long advocated for sustainably produced local goods and empowerment of youth through educational food programs. [8]

Kofi Atta Annan was a Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh secretary-general of the United Nations from 1997 to 2006. Annan and the UN were the co-recipients of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize. He was the founder and chairman of the Kofi Annan Foundation, as well as chairman of The Elders, an international organisation founded by Nelson Mandela.
Maurice Frederick Strong, was a Canadian oil and mineral businessman and a diplomat who served as Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations.
Alice Louise Waters is an American chef, restaurateur, and author. In 1971, she opened Chez Panisse, a restaurant in Berkeley, California, famous for its role in creating the farm-to-table movement and for pioneering California cuisine.
The Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement is an annual award for environmental science, environmental health, and energy. Tyler Laureates receive a $250,000 cash prize and a medallion. The prize is administered by the University of Southern California and was established by John and Alice Tyler in 1973. It is regarded as the "Nobel for environment".
The UNECE Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters, usually known as the Aarhus Convention, was signed on 25 June 1998 in the Danish city of Aarhus. It entered into force on 30 October 2001. As of March 2014, it had 47 parties—46 states and the European Union. All of the ratifying states are in Europe and Central Asia. The EU has begun applying Aarhus-type principles in its legislation, notably the Water Framework Directive. Liechtenstein and Monaco have signed the convention but have not ratified it.
The Global 500 Roll of Honour was an award given from 1987 to 2003 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The award recognized the environmental achievements of individuals and organizations around the world. A successor system of UNEP awards called Champions of the Earth started in 2005.
Achim Steiner is a Brazilian-born environmentalist who currently serves as the administrator of the United Nations Development Programme and vice-chair of United Nations Sustainable Development Group.
James William MacNeill, OC was a Canadian consultant, environmentalist, and international public servant.
Alberto José Rodriguez Saá is an Argentine lawyer and politician. He was Governor of San Luis Province on two separate occasions. He was presidential candidate for the center-right peronism, Orthodox and Federal Peronism, in 2007 and 2011.
Digital Earth is the name given to a concept by former US vice president Al Gore in 1998, describing a virtual representation of the Earth that is georeferenced and connected to the world's digital knowledge archives.
The Elders is an international non-governmental organisation of public figures noted as senior statesmen, peace activists and human rights advocates, who were brought together by Nelson Mandela in 2007. They describe themselves as "independent global leaders working together for peace, justice, human rights and a sustainable planet". The goal Mandela set for The Elders was to use their "almost 1,000 years of collective experience" to work on solutions for seemingly insurmountable problems such as climate change, HIV/AIDS, and poverty, as well as to "use their political independence to help resolve some of the world's most intractable conflicts".
Heroes of the Environment is a list published in Time magazine. The inaugural list was published in October 2007. The 2007 list contains 43 entries, individuals or groups that have contributed substantially to the preservation of environment, and is divided into four categories: Leaders & Visionaries, Activists, Scientists & Innovators, and Moguls & Entrepreneurs.

He was vice president of the United States from 1993 to 2001, the Democratic Party's presidential nominee in 2000, and the co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. He has been involved with the environmental activist movement for a number of decades and has had full participation since he left the vice-presidency in 2001.
Jian Yi is a Chinese independent filmmaker, social innovator and food activist who currently conducts research at the Animal Law and Policy Program at the Harvard Law School since 2022. His films Bamboo Shoots and Super, Girls! won a number of international film festival awards. Jian Yi co-founded the ground-breaking China Villager Documentary Project with filmmaker Wu Wenguang in 2004, and founded the IFChina Original Studio in 2008. His works have been shown at numerous film festivals, museums and university campuses across the globe. Jian Yi also spoke at the Apple Artists' Series among many public and media talks, including the BBC and the National Public Radio.
