Although Holland Township obtained its first library in 1847, it was not until 1867, when Holland became a city, that the Holland Public Library established its own collection. The library was housed first on the second floor of the old City Hall on 8th Street, later moved to the second floor of the Model Drug Store, also on 8th Street, and in 1911 finally moved to the new City Hall on 12th Street, where it remained until 1960, when the city built the Herrick Public Library. In 1953, Hazel Hayes, Holland's first professional librarian, was hired. Recognizing the city's need for funding for a new library, she wrote a letter to Ray Herrick, the owner of Tecumseh Products and originally from the Holland area, asking if he was interested in helping the library obtain a new building. Months later, he anonymously donated $300,000 to build a public library for the city of Holland. Following his gift, other groups donated funds, and in 1960, the newly built Herrick Public Library opened its doors on River Ave. between 12th and 13th Streets. Holland's mayor at the time, Robert Visscher, rejoiced at the opening of the new library, saying, "Never in the history of the community has anything so wonderful happened to the city of Holland…There is nothing we need as much as a new library." In 1971, in order to expand its service area, Herrick District Library joined the Lakeland Library Federation, which became the Lakeland Library Cooperative in 1977, allowing library patrons access to a larger collection. [2]
Since its opening in 1960, the Herrick Library's service area has grown from 25,000 to over 102,000 people, and this would not be possible if not for the 1999 library expansion. Prior to the renovation, Herrick Library faced numerous space challenges and could not adequately serve its patrons. Library consultant Anders Dahlgren reported that Herrick was 42 percent lower than the national average in terms of the number of volumes held and that 60 percent more space was needed just to house the number of collections at that time.
Spatially, the library was insufficient. Staff members were overcrowded in offices, auditorium space was insufficient, programming and event space was limited and there were no conference rooms at all. In addition, Herrick was forced to remove many videos, books, art and reference materials to make room for newer materials, most patrons waited in check out lines for 10 minutes or more, and the number of patrons in the library eliminated the library's ability to offer a quiet reading environment.
The expansion came after a long-awaited millage referendum and the switch from Herrick's status as a public library to a district library. The switch meant that the control of the library shifted from the City of Holland to an area wide board, allowing for a more reasonable form of funding. In December 1996, the District Library Planning Committee endorsed a "resolution of intent" to fund a library district which was unanimously supported. Then in 1997, focus was placed on receiving a millage referendum that sought $11.5 million in funding. On May 6, 1997, the City of Holland as well as surrounding Townships voted to approve 1.5 mills for a period of 20 years to support the establishment and operation of the Herrick District Library.
The renovation began on January 4, 1998 and took 18 months with the reopening occurring on June 11, 1999. The new building has been increased in size by 48,144 square feet (4,472.7 m2), or 200 percent over the original building, leaving a total square footage of 72,291, and was designed by Frye, Gillan & Molinaro Architects Ltd.
In addition to the new Herrick District Library, the North Side Branch, located on Riley St., was completed in early 2000, giving Herrick an additional 5,200 square feet (480 m2).
In 2016, voters overwhelmingly approved a renewal of the library's operating millage. [4] The millage will allow for many improvements, including expansion at the North Branch and additional hours at each location. The library checks out more than 1 million physical and digital items each year. [5]

It primarily serves Jacksonville and Duval County merged areas, and is also used by the neighboring Baker, Nassau, Clay, and St. Johns counties. It is one of the largest library systems in Florida, with a collection of over three million items. A division of the city government, the library has the third largest group of city employees, after the city's fire department and sheriff's office. There are twenty branches and a main library in the system.
The Southfield Public Library is a public library in Southfield, Michigan. The library serves the communities of Southfield and Lathrup Village.
The Hillsboro Public Library is a two-location public library system in Hillsboro, Oregon, United States. First opened in 1914 in a Carnegie library building, the system provides services to a population area of 137,000 people. As of 2015, the system had a usage of 922,000 visits per year, with circulation nearly 3 million items per year. One library is located near downtown in Shute Park, with the other location in the central portion of the city near the airport. The Hillsboro Public Library is part of Washington County Cooperative Library Services (WCCLS), which ensures library service is available to all residents of Washington County. As of 2015, the director of the library is Stephanie Chase.
The Indian Trails Public Library District is a public library district located in Wheeling, Illinois, United States, serving 67,000 residents in Wheeling, Buffalo Grove, Prospect Heights. The library also has a branch located at 99 E. Palatine Road in Prospect Heights. In 2014, 375,000 people visited the Indian Trails Library and 1.3 million items were loaned. The library also hosted 1,689 programs that were attended by over 44,000 people.
The Cook Memorial Public Library District (CMPLD) serves communities in Lake County, Illinois: Libertyville, Green Oaks, Vernon Hills, Indian Creek, Mettawa, and parts of Mundelein. There are two full-service library facilities: Cook Park Library, 413 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Libertyville, and Aspen Drive Library, 701 Aspen Drive in Vernon Hills. CMPLD is a member of the Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS).
The Ypsilanti District Library is a library in Washtenaw County, Michigan, serving Ypsilanti, Ypsilanti Township, and Superior Township. The library has been in operation since 1868, and today provides services with three branches and a bookmobile.
The Grande Prairie Public Library serves the communities of Hazel Crest, Illinois, and Country Club Hills, Illinois. It is located at 3479 W. 183rd Street in Hazel Crest, in the south suburbs of Chicago. The library is a member of the Metropolitan Library System.
The West Bloomfield Township Public Library is located in West Bloomfield, Michigan, 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Detroit. The library system consists of the Main Branch and the Westacres Branch and serves the communities of West Bloomfield Township, and the cities of Keego Harbor, Orchard Lake and Sylvan Lake. West Bloomfield was ranked on Hennen’s American Public Library Ratings Index of top public libraries in 2005 and 2008 and has overall 150 employees. The West Bloomfield Township Public Library has been named one of 10 recipients of the 2010 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the United States of America's highest honor for museums and libraries. The annual award, made by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) since 1994, recognizes institutions for outstanding social, educational, environmental, or economic contributions to their communities.
The Davenport Public Library is a public library located in Davenport, Iowa. With a history dating back to 1839, the Davenport Public Library's Main Library is currently housed in a 1960s building designed by Kennedy Center architect Edward Durell Stone. The Davenport Public Library system is made up of three libraries—the Main Library at 321 Main Street; the Fairmount Branch Library at 3000 N. Fairmount Street (41°33′06″N90°37′54″W); and the Eastern Avenue Branch Library at 6000 Eastern Avenue (41°34′59″N90°33′12″W).
The Euclid Public Library is the public library serving Euclid, Ohio. It was originally created in 1935. In 1997 the library was expanded to a 48,000 sq ft (4,500 m2) complex. Since its 1997 expansion the library has consistently ranked highly on the Hennen's American Public Library Ratings (HAPLR) Index.
CityCenterDC, sometimes colloquially called CityCenter, is a mixed-use development consisting of two condominium buildings, two rental apartment buildings, two office buildings, a luxury hotel, and public park in downtown Washington, D.C. It encompasses 2,000,000 square feet (190,000 m2) and covers more than five city blocks. The $950 million development began construction on April 4, 2011, on the site of the former Washington Convention Center—a 10.2-acre (4.1 ha) site bounded by New York Avenue NW, 9th Street NW, H Street NW, and 11th Street NW. Most of the development was completed and open for business by summer 2015. The luxury hotel Conrad Washington, DC, opened in February 2019.
The Bronx Library Center is a branch of the New York Public Library in the Fordham section of the Bronx in New York City. The library is located at 310 East Kingsbridge Road between Fordham Road and East 192nd Street, two blocks east of the Grand Concourse. It is the central library for the Bronx, and the largest library in the borough.
The Boulder Public Library is the public library of Boulder, Colorado in the United States. The main branch and the Carnegie Branch Library for Local History are located in downtown Boulder, while the George Reynolds Branch is in south Boulder and Meadows Branch is in east Boulder.
The Muskegon Area District Library (MADL) is the largest multi-branch library system in Muskegon County with eleven community locations and one bookmobile. The administration headquarters are located in Fruitport Township.
