The Indian Institute of Cartoonists [1] (IIC) is an organisation based in Bangalore that serves to promote and preserve cartooning and cartoonists in India. Founded in 2001, the institute hosts the Indian Cartoon Gallery [2] with rotating exhibits focusing on different artists. It has organised more than one hundred exhibitions of cartoons.

Founders and Brief History

IIC was registered as a non profitable organization under Trust act in 2001 to promote the art of cartooning in India with B. V. Ramamurthy as the Chair person, V. G. Narendra as the Managing Trustee and B.G. Gujjarappa as a member Trustee. The chief patron as Mario Miranda. [3] Then Governor of Karnataka, V. S. Ramadevi inaugurated the IIC at Bangalore on 8 June 2001. Seven leading cartoonists were felicitated with Lifetime Achievement Award. Mario Miranda, Pran, S.D. Padnis, Bapu, Gopulu, Yesudasan and S. K. Nadig. More than 100 cartoonists from across the country had participated in the function. R. K. Laxman was felicitated with Lifetime achievement Award in February 2002 in another function. [4]

After the demise of the IIC Chairman B. V. Ramamurthy, Ashok Kheny (M.D. Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprise and an ardent admirer of the cartoons) step forward as Honorary Chairman of the institute. He dedicated the Institute 5000 square feet of premises in the heart of Bangalore to establish the Indian Cartoon Gallery, first of its kind in India. The premises has a vast, tastefully designed 2000 sq. ft. of Gallery, a conference hall and a space for a Library. Since then, every month the gallery is conducting fresh cartoon exhibition of the professional as well as amateur cartoonist. Later on the gallery has been awarded by the Limca Book of Records. [5]

The Maya Kamath Memorial Awards(MKMA : 2008-2021) Competition for excellence in political cartoons and Best Budding Cartoonists award was started in 2008. IIC is also organising MKMA competition. These awards have been instituted by the family of late cartoonist Maya Kamath (1951-2001). The jury for selecting best cartoons for the awards includes Girish Karnad, S. G. Vasudev, B. G. Gujjarappa and Satish Acharya. [58] [59]

In Bangladesh, he is best known as "Cartoonist Arif" for anti-corruption cartoons. He's won multiple awards for Anti-Corruption cartoons from Transparency International Bangladesh and the Daily Star. He was the first and former guest cartoonist of International Cities of Refuge Network (ICORN). He is a publisher of cartoon magazine Toons Mag and the organizer of international cartoon contests and exhibitions.

He was Member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from Bidar South Vidhan Sabha constituency from 9 May 2013 to 15 May 2018.

Pamarthy Shankar is an artist, caricaturist and cartoonist from Hyderabad, India. He is currently working as chief cartoonist for Sakshi, a daily newspaper in Hyderabad published in Telugu.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Comic Con India</span> Series of comic conventions in India

Comic Con India (CCI) is a series of annual comic-based conventions held in India. The first edition was held in New Delhi in 2011 and over the years has expanded to other major cities in India such as Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad and Ahmadabad. There are annual comic cons now in all these cities. Cumulatively these five cities attract over 200,000 visitors with over 1200 exhibitors. Jatin Varma, the founder & managing director of Comic Con India, launched the first comic con in India in Delhi in 2011. Since 2014, Comic Con India has been conducted in collaboration with ReedPop, the organisers of the New York Comic Con and the MCM London Comic Con.

Harish Chandra Shukla, better known by his pen name Kaak, is an Indian editorial cartoonist and caricaturist who works in Hindi-language media. He is the foremost Hindi newspaper cartoonist, having worked with leading newspapers such as Jansatta, Navbharat Times, Dainik Jagran, Rajasthan Patrika, and a few others, in a career spanning several decades. 'Kaak' means crow in Hindi, which according to a proverb, is the bird that raises its raucous voice when someone tells a lie.

B. V. Ramamurthy was an Indian cartoonist from Bangalore. His regular cartoons were published in newspapers such as the Deccan Herald, Prajavani, Mayura and Sudha from Karnataka. The cartoon column titled Mr. Citizen became popular among newspaper readers. The cartoonist tried to bring out the issues of a common man and also issue of ongoing political developments for over 33 years.

Rudrapatna Krishnadikshita Padmanabha, commonly known by his initials RKP, is an Indian Carnatic music vocalist, performer, music teacher and author from the state of Karnataka. He established "Sapta Swara Devatha Dhyana Mandira" at native village Rudrapatna, Karnataka, memorializing renowned musicians of Indian classical music. He has been serving as the president of Karnataka Ganakala Parishat since 2004. He received Kempegowda Award and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.
