Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA) Jamnagar, Gujarat, India which was founded in 1967. It has a joint campus with, an Institute of National Importance, established in 2020. [1]
In 1940, the erstwhile royal family of Nawanagar State established the Shri Gulabkunverba Ayurveda Society in Nawanagar (now Jamnagar). The Society had translated Charaka Samhita into English, Hindi and Gujarati languages. The society built the Dhanwantari Mandir, a large palatial building, in 1944. The society founded Shree Gulabkunverba Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya, the first Ayurveda college of India, in 1946. Following the independence of India in 1947, the Government of India focused on revival and reorganisation of Ayurveda. On recommendation of the committees established by the government, the Central Institute for Research in Indigenous System of Medicine (CIRISM), the first Ayurveda research institute of India, was founded at Dhanwantari Mandir in 1952. The Centre for PG Studies and Research in Ayurveda (CPGS&RA), the first post-graduate Ayurveda college of India, was established in July 1956. In 1963, Shree Gulabkunverba Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya, CIRISM and CPGS&RA were integrated to create the Institute for Ayurvedic Studies and Research (IASR). [2]
The Gujarat Ayurved University was established in 1967 by the act. [2] [3] The university superseded the IASR and the CPGS&RA was renamed as Institute of Post Graduate Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (IPGT&RA). In 1999, the Indian Institute of Ayurvedic Pharmaceutical Sciences (IIAPS) were established which offers a Diploma in Ayurved Pharmacy. The Maharshi Patanjali Institute for Yoga Naturopathy Education and Research was founded in 2000. [2] The other constituent institutes include the International Center for Ayurvedic Studies and the University School of Continuing Education in Ayurved. [4]
In 2020, [5] Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA), an autonomous institute, [6] was established in the university campus which took over all the existing colleges on the campus. [5] [2] [7] It is declared as an institute of national importance dedicated to Ayurvedic studies and research. [8] The ITRA has 12 departments, three clinical laboratories and three research laboratories. [6] About 50 acres were allocated for the college campuses while another 50 acres were allocated for a botanical garden. [2]
In 2021, the act governing the university was repealed and reenacted the Gujarat Ayurved University Act with changes by the Government of Gujarat following establishment of the ITRA. [9] The university continues to govern the affiliated Ayurveda colleges in Gujarat.[ citation needed ]
Ayu is a quarterly journal published by the ITRA focusing on research, education and propagation of Ayurveda. It was started in 1964. [10]
Ramdev, known also by the prefix Baba, is an Indian yoga guru, businessman and brand ambassador for Patanjali Ayurved. He is primarily known for being a proponent of yoga and ayurveda in India. Ramdev has been organizing and conducting large yoga camps since 2002 and broadcasting his yoga classes on various TV channels. He co-founded Patanjali Ayurved and Patanjali Yogpeeth with his colleague Balkrishna in 2006. Ramdev has received criticism over his comments related to modern medicine, yoga, and ayurveda.

Shree Somnath Sanskrit University (SSSU) is a public university located in Gujarat, India. It was created by the Gujarat State government through the Shree Somnath Sanskrit University Act in 2005 for the research and teaching of Sanskrit literature, with objectives to preserve India’s cultural and linguistic heritage. The main campus in Veraval is home to seven departments, or faculties, which, together with 110 affiliated colleges, research institutes, and centers across Gujarat, award nine different degrees, including B.A., M.A., and PhD, in a variety of fields. Charaka shapath is a certain passage of text in Charaka Samhita, a Sanskrit text on Ayurveda believed to have been composed between 100 BCE and 200 CE. The passage referred to as Charaka Shapath is written in the form a set of instructions by a teacher to prospective students of the science of medicine. According to Charaka Samhita, the unconditional agreement to abide by these instructions is a necessary precondition to be eligible to be taught in the science of medicine. The passage gives explicit instructions on the necessity of practicing asceticism during student life, student-teacher relationship, the importance of committing oneself fully and completely for the well-being of the patient, whom to treat, how to behave with women, and several other related issues. The passage appears as paragraphs 13–14 in Chapter 8 of the Vimanasthana in Charaka Samhita.
Ayurveda Day, also known as National Ayurveda Day, is observed every year in India and worldwide on the occasion of the birthday of Dhanvantari, the Hindu god of medicine. The Puranas mentioned him as the god of Ayurveda. In 2016, the Government of India's Ministry of AYUSH declared the birth anniversary of Dhanvantari as National Ayurveda Day. The first Ayurveda Day was first celebrated on 28 October 2016.
