Lego Atlantis (stylized as LEGO Atlantis) was a product range of the construction toy Lego, themed around the underwater world of Atlantis. [2] The range was launched in early 2010 and discontinued by the end of 2011. The toy sets included models of buildable underwater vehicles, as well as "heroic diver" and "shark warrior" minifigures. A ride based on the range was operated at Legoland Windsor Resort.

Development and launch

Designer William Thorogood commented that from design focus groups, "it emerged that there were certain key icons the product simply had to include: propellers, dome cockpits, big lights, helmets, harpoons, torpedo-like weapons, tridents, giant squid, and evil sharks." [3]

The theme was revealed in the Lego Club Magazine in September 2009. The associated toy sets were released from December 2009. [4]

Story and characters

The Lego Atlantis theme backstory was described on the Lego website and in the Lego catalogue. The Atlantis Crew were described as a deep sea salvage crew who searched the ocean for shipwrecks and treasure. The crew finds a clue to the location of the long lost Atlantis city, and then makes it their mission to search it out and uncover its mysteries. [5]

The sets introduced two groups of good and evil characters. The first was the Atlantis salvage crew of "heroic divers", led by Captain Ace Speedman. Also in the crew was marine biologist Dr. Jeff Fisher, First Mate Lance Spears, "Tech Expert" Axel Storm, and apprentice Bobby Buoy. Professor Samantha Artesia Rhodes was also part of the team, but was described as having "not initially been part of the crew, so she tricks them into helping look for Atlantis". [6] [7]

The evil characters were described as "Atlantis Warriors", and had human-like bodies with the heads of a sea creature. The three warriors were the "Squid Warrior" (with tentacles as well as a squid-like head), "Manta Warrior" (with the head of a manta ray), and "Shark Warrior'" who performed a shark attack. [6] Finally, there was the "Portal Emperor", who resided over the portal to Atlantis.

Sets and products

According to Bricklink, The Lego Group released a total of 24 Lego sets and promotional polybags as part of the Lego Atlantis theme. [1] It was discontinued by the end of 2011. [8] The largest, Portal of Atlantis (set number: 8078) contained 1007 pieces, and instructions to build a portal to Atlantis, as well as six minifigures: three divers, a shark warrior, a squid warrior, and the portal emperor. Others included Seabed Scavenger (set number: 8059), Typhoon Turbo Sub (set number: 8060), Gateway of the Squid (set number: 8061), Atlantis Exploration HQ (set number: 8077), Shadow Snapper (set number: 8079) and Temple of Atlantis (set number: 7985). As well as the Lego models, a number of other products were created to tie-in with the theme. These included wearable items such as a water gun, a "harpoon blaster", a trident, a shield, a collections of minifigure magnets, and keyring accessories. [10] The Atlantis theme also produced a board game for two to four players titled "Atlantis Treasure", which was released in 2010. [11]

Attractions

In 2010, Lego Summer Camp was located in Atlantis, on Paradise Island on the Bahamas. The attraction was opened by Frankie Jonas (younger brother of the Jonas Brothers). It also included a life-sized figure of a SCUBA diver from the Lego Atlantis line of toys called L.A.N.S.E. (Lego Atlantis Navigational SCUBA Explorer) and Atlantis Kids Adventures (AKA) is an 8,000-square-foot club that takes the idea of personalization to the kids' level, allowing them to choose their own adventure. In 2011, a ride based on the Atlantis theme was introduced at Legoland Windsor Resort. Atlantis Submarine Voyage combined a dark submarine ride with Sea Life exhibits and was located in the Adventure Land area of the park. The attraction housed a 1 million litre tank that was home to 50 marine species. [14] The ride was refurbished in 2019 and renamed Lego City Deep Sea Adventure. [15]

Other media

In 2010, three books based on the Lego Atlantis theme were released. Lego Atlantis: The Quest for the Lost City and Lego Atlantis: The Menace from the Deep Activity Book were released on 1 April 2010 by Penguin Random House Children's UK. [16] [17] Lego Atlantis Brickmaster was released on 16 August 2010 by DK. [18]

Lego Atlantis: The Movie is a 22-minute animated film that was produced for the Lego Atlantis theme. The storyline follows a group of treasure hunters looking for the lost city of Atlantis. [19] The film was first shown on the Cartoon Network website on January 15, 2010. It was directed by Mark Baldo. [20]

Unlike other Lego themes, which take place in a fictional "Lego Universe", most of the Adventurers sets took places in real-world locations, such as Egypt, the Amazon rainforest, the Himalayas, India, and China. The only fictional sub-theme took place on an island where prehistoric creatures still lived. The theme was first introduced in 1998. The product line was discontinued in 2003 and replaced with the Lego Pharaoh's Quest theme in 2011.

Lego Pirates was a Lego theme launched in 1989 featuring pirates, soldiers from the Napoleonic Wars, Pacific Islanders, sailing ships, and buried treasure, being influenced by the late Golden Age of Piracy. The theme has been seen in Lego System, Duplo and the 4+ theme.

The Lego Castle theme, part of the Lego product line, was conceptualized around a medieval world motif featuring knights and castles. This theme was first introduced in Europe in 1978, followed by its North American release in 1981. It remained a continuously supported Lego theme until 1999. The 'Lego Castle' name was subsequently reused for two distinct single-theme series: one running from 2007 to 2009 and another in 2013. This theme is distinct yet related to other medieval-inspired Lego themes, including Knights Kingdom, Knights Kingdom II, and Kingdoms. Initially, Lego Castle sets were marketed under the 'Legoland' brand, which persisted until 1991. Lego Wild West was a Lego theme based on the Old West period of the United States. It was in production for only two years, from 1996 to 1997.

Lego Ninja was a theme and product range of the construction toy Lego. Launched in 1998, the collection was its own theme. It had many elements of the ninja warriors from feudal Japan. The majority of the sets were released in 1998 and 1999; however, three small sets of minifigures were released in 2000 as part of the "Mini Heroes Collection". After this, the theme was discontinued, and was effectively replaced by the "Knights Castle" theme in 2000.

Lego Aqua Raiders was a Lego theme that was launched by The Lego Group in 2007 and discontinued the same year. The theme focused on a team of divers searching for treasure in the Bermuda Triangle. The product line consisted of seven construction toy sets released in the same year.

Lego Toy Story is a Lego theme based on the Disney·Pixar's Toy Story film franchise. The first four sets were released on December 30, 2009, with an additional two sets being released on January 4, 2010. In May, five Lego and four Duplo sets were released under the Toy Story 3 sub-theme. For the release of Toy Story 4 there was one Duplo set based on the third film and 6 Lego sets based on the fourth film. These sets were released in March and in April 2019 this time under the Juniors line. The minifigures in the sets were also now redesigned.

Lego Prince of Persia Lego theme

Lego Prince of Persia was a Lego theme based on the 2010 film Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. It was licensed from Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films. The theme was introduced in 2010 and was discontinued by the end of 2011.

Lego Ninjago is a Lego theme that was created in 2011 and a flagship brand of The Lego Group. It is the first theme to be based on ninja since the discontinuation of the Lego Ninja theme in 2000. It was produced to coincide with the animated television series Ninjago, which was superseded in 2023 by a new series titled Ninjago: Dragons Rising.

Lego Pirates of the Caribbean is a discontinued Lego theme that is based on the film series of the same name. It is licensed from Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films. There are nine known sets. The first wave was released in May 2011 with the second wave coming out in November 2011. In November 2010, it was officially announced by Lego that the video game Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game was in production. It was released on May 10, 2011, in North America. The series acts as a thematic replacement for the popular Lego Pirates theme, featuring many of the same elements. Most of the sets are similar to the Lego Pirates theme. The theme was first introduced in 2011 and discontinued in 2017.

Lego Pharaoh's Quest was a Lego theme that was first introduced in 2011. It uses elements from the previous Lego Adventurers theme. The Lego Pharaoh's Quest theme was discontinued by the end of 2012.

Lego Friends are a product range of Lego construction toys designed primarily for girls that was launched in 2012. It introduced "mini-doll" figures, which are about the same size as traditional Lego minifigures but are more detailed and realistic. The original cast consisted of Andrea, Olivia, Stephanie, Mia and Emma. The theme was rebooted and relaunched in January 2023 to focus on a more diverse cast of characters, the main cast now consisting of Aliya, Nova, Zac, Liann, Paisley, Leo, Autumn and Olly.

Lego Legends of Chima was a Lego theme that was introduced in 2013 and discontinued in 2015. The product line was based on the storyline of Legends of Chima, a 3D animated television series, which was produced to coincide with the Lego theme. The storyline was set in the fictional realm of "Chima", a fantasy world inhabited by various warring tribes of anthropomorphic animals that battle to collect a substance called "Chi". Alongside the television series and several shorts based on Lego Legends of Chima. The theme also produced a range of associated media, including theme park attractions, video games, and publications.

Lego 4+ also known as Lego 4 Juniors was a Lego theme that was first introduced in 2003, designed for children aged 4+. It is the successor of the Lego Jack Stone theme released in 2001. The 4+ theme consisted of Pirates, City and Spider-Man sub-themes. It was eventually discontinued by the end of December 2005.

The Lego Movie is a Lego product line based on the 2014 film of the same name. It was licensed from The Lego Group and Warner Bros. Animation. The theme was first introduced in 2014 to coincide with the release of the film, along with The Lego Movie Video Game. Further sets were produced to coincide with the release of the second film in The Lego Movie franchise, titled The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. The product line was discontinued by the end of 2019.

Lego Monster Fighters was a Lego theme based on Universal Studios Monsters from the horror fiction genre. The Monster Fighters fight against the Lord Vampyre's monsters while collecting the moonstones. The story takes place in the Monster Realm and it's similar to The Monster Squad film. The theme was first introduced in May 2012. It was eventually discontinued by the end of December 2014. The theme also produced a range of associated media, including theme park attractions, several shorts, video game, app and publications.
