Lisa McMann (born February 27, 1968) is an American author and the creator of The Unwanteds and The Unwanteds Quests series for young readers and the WAKE trilogy for young adults.

Contents

McMann was born in Holland, Michigan and now lives in Tempe, Arizona. [1] She graduated from Calvin College in 1990. [2] Her first novel, WAKE, debuted on the New York Times Best Seller list for children's chapter books. [3] She is also the author of FADE, which debuted on the New York Times best-seller list and remained there eleven weeks, [4] and of GONE, the last book in the WAKE series, which was released February 2010.

McMann has published many short stories, including the creative nonfiction essay, "When You're Ten", featured in Literary Mama, and the award-winning short story, "The Day of the Shoes", in 2004. One year later, her story, "Like Waves on Rocks" [5] was published in the Gator Springs Gazette. McMann's short stories are written for adult audiences while her novels are intended for young adults.

Personal life

Lisa is married to fellow writer and musician, Matt McMann, and they have two adult children. Her son is an artist named Kilian McMann and her daughter is an actress, Kennedy McMann. Kennedy was cast in Nancy Drew as the titular character, in a CW series.

Wake is a 2008 novel by Lisa McMann centered on seventeen-year-old Janie Hannagan's involuntary power which thrusts her into others' dreams. The novel follows Janie through parts of her young adulthood, focusing mainly on the events that occur during her senior year, in which she meets an enigmatic elderly woman, and becomes involved with Cabel, a loner and purported drug-dealer at Fieldridge High School. The book is set up in a diary like form, specifying the date and time at which each event occurs. The two books that follow Wake in the trilogy are Fade and Gone. Wake debuted on the New York Times Best Seller list for children's chapter books, and garnered several awards for young adult literature.

<i>The Bluford Series</i> Series of young adult novels

The Bluford Series is a widely read collection of contemporary American young adult novels set in the fictional inner-city high school of Bluford High in Southern California. Bluford is named for Guion "Guy" Bluford, the first African-American astronaut. The series was created and published by Townsend Press and was co-distributed by Scholastic. As part of an effort to promote reading in underfunded school districts, Townsend Press originally made the Bluford Series available to schools for a dollar each.
