Michael Brin Prize in Dynamical Systems

Last updated

The Michael Brin Prize in Dynamical Systems, abbreviated as the Brin Prize, is awarded to mathematicians who have made outstanding advances in the field of dynamical systems and are within 14 years of their PhD. [1] The prize is endowed by and named after Michael Brin, [1] whose son Sergey Brin [2] is a co-founder of Google. Michael Brin is a retired mathematician at the University of Maryland and a specialist in dynamical systems. [3]

The first prize was awarded in 2008, between 2009 and 2017 it has been awarded bi-annually, and since 2017 annually. Artur Avila, the 2011 awardee, went on to win the Fields Medal in 2014. [4]

In mathematics, Mostow's rigidity theorem, or strong rigidity theorem, or Mostow–Prasad rigidity theorem, essentially states that the geometry of a complete, finite-volume hyperbolic manifold of dimension greater than two is determined by the fundamental group and hence unique. The theorem was proven for closed manifolds by Mostow and extended to finite volume manifolds by Marden (1974) in 3 dimensions, and by Prasad in all dimensions at least 3. Gromov (1981) gave an alternate proof using the Gromov norm. Besson, Courtois & Gallot (1996) gave the simplest available proof.

Outer billiards is a dynamical system based on a convex shape in the plane. Classically, this system is defined for the Euclidean plane but one can also consider the system in the hyperbolic plane or in other spaces that suitably generalize the plane. Outer billiards differs from a usual dynamical billiard in that it deals with a discrete sequence of moves outside the shape rather than inside of it.
