Michel Hausmann is a Venezuelan-born theater director, writer, and producer. He is the co-founder and artistic director of Miami New Drama, the resident theater company and operator of the Colony Theatre in Miami Beach. [1] Under Hausmann's leadership, the company has produced over a dozen productions - nine of them world premieres. [2] Michel Hausmann also started Miami New Drama's educational program, which serves more than 8,000 students annually [3] and provides online programming for people across the United States and internationally - offering master classes on a variety of different theater topics such as acting, playwriting, directing, and theater management. Biography

Hausmann is of Jewish descent, and was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela. After graduating from Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts with a BA in film, [5] Hausmann returned to Caracas. Once back, he founded his first theater company, Palo de Agua, in 2003 alongside executive producer, Yair Rosemberg. Under their leadership, Palo de Agua became an award-winning theater company. Its production of Jesus Christ Superstar was seen by over 170,000 people. [6] Following an attack by the Venezuelan government during the production, Michel Hausmann left Venezuela and moved to New York City to pursue an MFA in Directing at Columbia University. [7] While at Columbia, Hausmann studied under renowned directors such as Anne Bogart and Gregory Mosher, among others. [8] His thesis play, The Golem of Havana, played at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in 2013 [9] and went on to have its world premiere at Barrington Stage Company in 2014. [10]

In 2016, Hausmann relocated to Miami, Florida and produced TheGolem of Havana at the Colony Theatre in Miami Beach; it was Miami New Drama's debut production. Miami New Drama is the second theater company founded by Michel Hausmann. He co-founded it with playwright, director, and medal of the arts winner, Moisés Kaufman. [11] In 2020, Miami New Drama produced Seven Deadly Sins: Temptation in the Magic City, a series of seven short plays around the theme of the seven deadly sins, shown in vacant Miami storefronts along Lincoln Road while the limited audience, socially distanced due to Coronavirus restrictions, watches and listens via headphones. The production was directed by Hausmann and authored by playwrights Hilary Bettis, Nilo Cruz, Moisés Kaufman, Rogelio Martinez, Dael Orlandersmith, Carmen Palaez, and Aurin Squire. [12] [13]

In 2024, he put together an immersive theater experience in collaboration with (and inside of) the Rubell Museum, titled The Museum Plays, a collection of short-format plays playing off of a set of paintings from the Rubell Museum's collection, each one performed in the same room as the piece that inspired it. Hausman commissioned the plays to playwrights Hannah Benitez, Harley Elias, Rogelio Martinez, Carmen Pelaez, Marco Ramirez and Aurin Squire, to be inspired by specific works by Alfonso Gonzalez Jr., Jenna Gribbon, Glenn Ligon, Kaari Upson and Kehinde Wiley. Conflicts with the Venezuelan government

During Hausmann's 2009 production of Fiddler on the Roof, the Grand Marshal of Ayacucho Symphony Orchestra, funded in its entirety by the Venezuelan government of President Hugo Chávez, abandoned the production two weeks before the opening, citing that its participation on a "Jewish play" would threaten the funding they receive from the Venezuelan government, a vocal foe of Israel. [25] The move was condemned by the Simon Wiesenthal Center and the Anti Defamation League. [25] [26] The production went forward, performed on a rooftop in Caracas with various musicians stepping up to play the score. [25]

When preparing for a 2010 production of Jesus Christ Superstar in Caracas, Hausmann secured a sponsorship deal for US$300,000 (equivalent to $402,600in 2022) with Research in Motion (RIM), makers of BlackBerry smartphones, and its cellular phone network partner, government-owned Movilnet. [27] [ dead link ] Leaked diplomatic cables revealed that, less than a month before opening night, the sponsorship pair added a clause stating that the production could not place advertising space even with other cash in a list of media outlets banned by RIM and Movilnet for being critical of the Chávez regime. [27] Hausmann and producer Yair Rosemberg chose instead to cancel the RIM-Movilnet sponsorship deal, and went public with this information. When the production opened at the Central University of Venezuela, it was attacked with tear gas by masked assailants. While the rector of the university stated that the attack was a continuation of incidents targeting the university, Hausmann called it an example of Chávez' intimidation against any theatre group branded enemies of the state "because they seek to maintain their autonomy". [28]

Relations between Cuba and Venezuela were established in 1902. The relationship deteriorated in the 1960s and Venezuela broke relations in late 1961 following the Betancourt Doctrine policy of not having ties with governments that had come to power by non-electoral means. A destabilizing factor was the Cuban support for the antigovernment guerrilla force that operates in remote rural areas. Venezuela broke off relations with Cuba after the Machurucuto invasion in 1967, when Cuban trained guerrillas landed in Venezuela seeking to recruit guerrillas and overthrow the government of Raúl Leoni. Eduardo Oscar Machado is a Cuban playwright living in the United States. Notable plays by Machado include Broken Eggs, Havana is Waiting and The Cook. Many of his plays are autobiographical or deal with Cuba in some way. Machado teaches playwriting at New York University. He has served as the artistic director of the INTAR Theatre in New York City since 2004. He is openly gay.

Aurin Squire is an African-American playwright, screenwriter, and reporter. He has written numerous plays, while his reporting has appeared in The New Republic, Talking Points Memo, Chicago Tribune, Miami Herald, and ESPN, among other outlets.

Arpa Foundation for Film, Music and Art and “Best Foreign Film”, NYC Downtown Film Festival, participated in Marche du Film del Cannes Film Festival “As you like it”. The feature was also part of the official selection of the Calcutta Film Festival 2009, the Mérida Film Festival 2009, the Havana Film Festival 2009 and the Margarita Film Festival 2009. He received the “MARA DE ORO” for best movie director in 2009.

Antisemitism in Venezuela has occurred throughout the history of the Jews in Venezuela. However, under the presidencies of both Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro, allegations of antisemitism grew following actions and statements by the Venezuelan government, while also occurring in public incidents. The Bolivarian government would also use the words of "Jewish" and "Zionist" interchangeably in order to avoid accusations of antisemitism.

Joanna Hausmann Jatar is a Venezuelan-American actress, comedian and television writer. She gained popularity through her videos on YouTube as well as on Univision's bilingual platform, Flama. She is currently the head writer for Hamster and Gretel.

The Aula Magna is an auditorium at the Central University of Venezuela. It is located within the University City of Caracas, next to the University's main library building. The hall was designed by the Venezuelan architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva in the 1940s and built by the Danish company Christiani & Nielsen from 1952–53. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in November 2000 for being artistically and architecturally significant. The most notable feature of the hall is its acoustic 'clouds', which serve both aesthetic and practical functions. They are an element of the hall's design which contributed to the science of interior space acoustics, though the building exterior is also architecturally significant.

Victoria Collado is a Cuban–American director. She assistant directed John Leguizamo's Latin History for Morons on Broadway, and has directed for Repertorio Español, MCC Youth Company, Sheen Center, Juggerknot Theatre Company, and Miami New Drama among other institutions. Collado was named a 2018-2020 resident of the WP Lab at WP Theater. Other recent directorial credits include That Rebel That; El Cruce Sobre el Niagara; El Burlador de Sevilla; A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings; The Crocodile's Bite; Amparo; and The Cubans at the Colony Theatre. She holds a B.F.A. in Theatre from Florida International University.

The Colony Theatre is a performing arts venue located on Lincoln Road in Miami, Florida. The theatre first opened as a Paramount Pictures movie house in 1935 with a capacity to sit 1,200 people. From the 1950s - 1990s, it functioned back and forth as a movie house and a live performance space. As of 2020, the Colony Theatre is a 417-seat performance venue managed by South Florida theater company, Miami New Drama. It hosts music, dance, and theater performances as well as Miami New Drama's theatrical season.

Miami New Drama is a nonprofit professional theater company located in Miami Beach, Florida, founded in 2014. Since October 2016 it has been the resident theater company and operator of the historic Colony Theatre on Miami Beach. Since its first production in January 2016, the company has produced work by American, Latin American, and international theater artists.
