Miss Manipur or Miss Manipur Queen is an annual beauty pageant that is run by the Manipur based Miss Manipur Committee (MMC). It is one of the most watched beauty pageants in North East India. It co-exists with Femina Miss India Manipur, Miss Kangleipak and Miss Meetei Chanu. The titleholder of Miss Manipur represents Manipur in the Miss North East, organised by Northeast Beauty Pageant Organisation (NEBPO) every year. [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

History

Miss Manipur was first held in the year 1951. It is the first beauty pageant organised in Manipur. In October, 2012, the Miss Manipur event (that was about to be held on November 12, 2012) was banned by 42 civil society organizations including 17 women bodies of Manipur. The women associations accused the event organizers for converting the contest into commercial way and also for promoting improper dressings of the participants. [7] [8] [9] In 2016, the ban was lifted up by the associations as the required rules and regulations for the event was finally composed. [9] [10]

Eligibility Criteria

A person is eligible to participate in the Miss Manipur contest if she is:

  1. of Indian origin (regardless of her birthplace) [11]
  2. belongs to the age group of 16–25 years [11]
  3. a resident of Manipur (documents required) [11]

She is the first Indian transgender to be appointed as a state icon for the parliamentary polls in the Lok Sabha elections. She is the first transgender to win the "Best Actor Award" in the 14th Manipur State Film Awards, 2022. It's Not My Choice directed by Priyakanta Laishram, Apaiba Leichil directed by Bobby Wahengbam are some of her notable films.

Beoncy Laishram is the first openly transgender doctor from Northeast India, and, as of 2021, she is the only transgender doctor from Manipur state. Beoncy is a Resident Medical Officer (RMO) at the Shija Hospitals and Research Institute in Imphal.

Femina Miss Manipur Queen or Miss India Manipur Queen is an annual beauty pageant that selects representatives from Manipur to compete in Miss India, and then to Miss World, one of the Big Four international beauty pageants. The event is organised by "Robert Naorem Studio and Academy", under the guidance of Robert Naorem. It is one of the most watched beauty pageants in North East India. It co-exists with Miss Manipur, Miss Kangleipak and Miss Meetei Chanu.

Miss Kangleipak (Women's Best Physique) is an annual female bodybuilding competition of Kangleipak (Manipur). It co-exists with Miss Manipur, Femina Miss India Manipur and Meetei Chanu. Founded in the year 2012 by the "Manipur Amateur Body Builders Association" (MABBA), Miss Kangleipak is sponsored by the "Janaki Bar Bell Club" (JBC), Singjamei and "Lamyanba Meitei Gym", Sagolband Moirang Hanuba Leirak.

The Mount Manipur Memorial is a memorial site in the Mount Manipur of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India. Spanning over an area of more than 45000 sq ft, the memorial site is dedicated to the Manipuri freedom fighters and the martyrs of the Anglo-Manipur war. In the year 2022, the memorial site won the "International Muse Design Award 2022", through the designs of the "Huidrom Design Studios" from Manipur.

The Kangla Nongpok Thong, shortly known as the Nongpok Thong, is the Eastern Gate Bridge of the Kangla Fort of Imphal, Kangleipak . With the re-opening of the modern Eastern Gate of the Kangla, the Kangla Western Gate was closed forever, under the leadership of Nongthombam Biren, the then Chief Minister of Manipur, due to the traditional Meitei belief that the western gate is regarded as the gate of the dead and it is ominous to enter the Kangla through the western doorway.

Femina Miss India 2023 was the 59th edition of the Femina Miss India beauty pageant. After a two-year hiatus, the entire processes of the competition from audition to the final was held on-ground. On the finals held on 15 April, 2023 at Imphal, Manipur, each contestant from 29 states and a collective representative for all Union Territories adding up to 30 participants competed for the title.

Thounaojam Strela Luwang is an Indian television anchor, social activist, model and beauty pageant title holder who was crowned 2nd Runner Up at Femina Miss India 2023. She represented her state Manipur at Femina Miss India 2023 after winning Femina Miss India Manipur 2023. She won Miss Manipur pageant held in 2017. She was also one of the top 5 finalists at the Miss Diva Northeast 2016-17. She was featured in 2018 educational film, Who Said Boys Can't Wear Make Up directed by Priyakanta Laishram, which was the first-ever film on gender-neutral fashion and men's make-up from Northeast India.

Native to the Manipuri people, it has 15,000 native speakers, mainly concentrated in the Sylhet Division of the nation. According to the Ethnologue, Meitei language is used as the first language (L1) by the Meitei Hindus as well as the Meitei Pangal and as the second language (L2) by the Bishnupriyas in Bangladesh.
