Moneylife is an online personal finance website. The original fortnightly print edition ceased production from May 2018.

History

Moneylife was founded by husband and wife team of Debashis Basu and Sucheta Dalal in 2006. [1]

The Moneylife foundation was launched in 2010. [1]

The National Stock Exchange of India (NSEoI) filed a Rs 100 crore defamation suit against Moneylife over a June 2015 publication of a whistleblower letter over allegations of preferential access to some brokers, the suit being withdrawn in September 2017. [2]

The final print edition of the magazine was published in May 2018. [3]

The publication's reporters have won several national and international awards, including three Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards and the CPJ International Press Freedom Award. It counts among the news outlets that are independent of the Indian government, and has been subject to several defamation suits by businessmen and politicians. In 2022, it fired one of its reporters who was alleged to have fabricated several news stories.

Byju's is an Indian multinational educational technology company, headquartered in Bangalore. It was founded in 2011 by Byju Raveendran and Divya Gokulnath. As of Sept 2023, Byju's was valued at $5.1 billion. As of April 2023, the company claims to have over 150 million registered students.

The NSE co-location scam relates to the market manipulation at the National Stock Exchange of India, India's leading stock exchange. Allegedly select players obtained market price information ahead of the rest of the market, enabling them to front run the rest of the market, possibly breaching the NSE's purpose of demutualisation exchange governance and its robust transparency-based mechanism. The alleged connivance of insiders by rigging NSE's algo-trading and use of co-located servers ensured substantial profits to a set of brokers. This widespread market fraud came to light when markets' regulator, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), received the first anonymous complaint through a whistle-blower's letter in January 2015. The whistle-blower alleged that trading members were able to capitalise on advance knowledge by colluding with some exchange officials. The overall default amount through NSE's high-frequency trading (HFT) is estimated to be ₹500 billion over five years.

Uday Mahurkar is an Indian journalist, political analyst and author. He was a deputy editor at the India Today group. In October 2020, he was appointed as the Information Commissioner by the Government of India.

Newslaundry is an Indian media watchdog that provides media critique, reportage and satirical commentary. It was founded in 2012 by Abhinandan Sekhri, Madhu Trehan and Prashant Sareen, all of whom earlier worked in print or television journalism. It was India's first subscription-driven website when launched, and since then other platforms have followed a similar model. In contrast to news websites such as The Wire, The Quint, ThePrint or Scroll.in, Newslaundry solely relies on public subscriptions, instead of donations or advertisements, for revenue.
