National Youth Council of Ireland

The National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) is a representative body for Irish youth organisations, [1] a role that is recognised in the 2001 Youth Work Act. [2] Currently there are 45 national youth organisations who are full member of the NYCI. [3] The National Youth Council of Ireland is a nominating body for elections to Seanad Éireann. [4]

Contents

The member organisations include a wide variety of youth organisations active at a national level and include youth club organisations, Scouting and Guiding or similar uniformed youth organisations, youth wings of political parties, Irish language youth organisations, and various other single issue and specialist youth groups. [3]

NYCI is a member of the European apex organisation for youth organisations and councils called the European Youth Forum YFJ. [5]

The NYCI publish a newsletter called Clár na nÓg on a monthly basis. [6]

Board

The board consists of a president, vice president, treasurer and 15 ordinary board members. They are:

Simon Harris served on the board of the NYCI in 2005. [10] Dan Boyle is a former vice-president of the NYCI. [11]

The Election Committee is a Hong Kong electoral college, the function of which is to select the Chief Executive (CE) and, since 2021, to elect 40 of the 90 members of the Legislative Council. Established by Annex I of the Basic Law of Hong Kong which states that "the Chief Executive shall be elected by a broadly representative Election Committee in accordance with this Law and appointed by the Central People's Government ." It is formed and performs its selection function once every five years, even in the event of a CE not completing their term. The membership of the Election Committee was expanded to 1,500 under the massive overhaul of the electoral system in 2021. Scouting Ireland is one of the largest youth movements on the island of Ireland, a voluntary educational movement for young people with over 45,000 members, including over 11,000 adult volunteers early 2020. Of the 750,000 people between the ages of 6 and 18 in Ireland, over 6% are involved with the organisation. It was founded in 2004, following the amalgamation of two of the Scouting organisations on the island. It is the World Organization of the Scout Movement-recognised Scouting association in the Republic of Ireland. In Northern Ireland it operates alongside The Scout Association of the UK and the Baden-Powell Scout Association.

Declan Bree is an Irish Independent politician. Foróige is an Irish organisation whose purpose is "to enable young people to involve themselves consciously and actively in their development and in the development of society". Macra na Tuaithe, the youth branch of Macra na Feirme, was formed on 14 March 1952. In 1981, the organisation changed its name to Foróige, derived from forbairt na hóige, which means "development of youth".
