Nikolaos Mavridis (born April 28, 1973) is the founder and director of the Interactive Robots and Media Lab (IRML), and a PhD graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology He is also an assistant professor of research at the Computer Science department, New York University Poly, and adjunct researcher at NCSR Demokritos.[ citation needed ] Before his PhD, he was awarded an M.Sc. from the University of California Los Angeles, and a M. Eng. (summa cum laude) from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.[ citation needed ] His research interests include human–robot interaction, and especially verbal and non-verbal communication with robots, artificial intelligence, machine perception, and cognitive systems.

Mavridis and his work at the Interactive Robots and Media Lab received coverage from media of more than 20 countries, such as the BBC, [1] [2] Agence France-Presse (AFP), [3] The National (Abu Dhabi), [4] Al Jazeera TV etc. Furthermore, Mavridis has been a TEDx Speaker twice, in TEDx Al Ain [5] and TEDx Athens. [6]

Apart from his academic activities, Mavridis has been a pro-bono contributor to a number of organizations: as a mentor in The Next Generation Initiative, a vice-president and executive committee member at the MIT HSA, as a vice-president to the Hellenic Artificial Intelligence Society, as a bid preparer and presenter and technical committee member that brought the World Robot Olympiad to Abu Dhabi, [7] and as the founding chair of the IEEE UAE Robotics and Automation Society. He is also an active member of the Horasis think tank based in Switzerland, whose purpose is to "enact visions for a sustainable future" through new platforms for cooperation and knowledge-sharing, particularly between developed countries and emerging markets.[ citation needed ]

Furthermore, Mavridis is a member of the National Committee of the Recreate Greece liberal party, and as a parliamentary candidate finished second in the May 2012 National Election in the district of A' Athens.[ citation needed ]

Jabal Hafeet is a mountain in the region of Tawam, on the border of the United Arab Emirates and Oman, which may be considered an outlier of Al Hajar Mountains in Eastern Arabia. The Interactive Robots and Media Lab (IRML) is a research laboratory, originally hosted at the College of IT of the United Arab Emirates University in Al-Ain, Abu Dhabi Emirate, UAE, then moved on to the CSE facilities of New York University Abu Dhabi. Starting January 2013 IRML is expanding, emancipating, and partially commercializing its operations.

The Ibn Sina Robot is the world's first android robot with Arabic language conversational abilities. Created by roboticists Nikolaos Mavridis and Hanson Robotics founder David Hanson at United Arab Emirates University's Interactive Robots and Media Lab, Ibn Sina was named after the famous 11th century Persian polymath (Avicenna). The robot is capable of facial expressions, hand gestures, Arabic language dialogue, face detection and face recognition. It is part of an Interactive Theatre installation, within a circular room with a diameter of 13 meters, containing a stage, a projection screen, and sensors. Experimentation regarding multiple forms of tele-participation in the theatre is taking place; such as live interactions between physically present robots and humans with avatars in online virtual worlds, and remote control of robots through brain-computer interfacing.

2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup

Hazza bin Zayed Stadium

Jawaharlal R. Gangaramani, is an Indian philanthropist, businessperson and the Partner of Al Fara'a Group which has presence in the UAE, Saudi Arabia & Oman. The Government of India honoured him, in 2010, with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his services to the field of social work.

Sethu Vijayakumar

Sethu Vijayakumar FRSE is Professor of Robotics at the University of Edinburgh and a judge on the BBC2 show Robot Wars. He is the Programme co-Director for Artificial Intelligence at The Alan Turing Institute, the UK's National Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, with the responsibility for defining and driving the institute's Robotics and Autonomous Systems agenda. He co-founded the Edinburgh Centre for Robotics in 2015 and was instrumental in bringing the first NASA Valkyrie humanoid robot out of the United States of America, and to Europe, where is it a focus of research at the School of Informatics. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2013.
