Paul Robert Verkuil (born December 4,1939) [1] is an American attorney,former dean of the Tulane University Law School,former president of the College of William and Mary,and former dean of Cardozo School of Law. [2] He is currently on the faculty of the Cardozo School of Law. [3]
Verkuil received his A.B. at the College of William &Mary and his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law. He also earned an M.A. from the New School for Social Research,and an LL.M. and J.S.D. from New York University School of Law.
Verkuil served as president of the College of William &Mary from July 1,1985 until his resignation,effective January 7,1992.
Verkuil has also served as the CEO of the American Automobile Association from 1992 to 1995. [2] [3]
From 1994 to 1997 Verkuil served as special master for the U.S. Supreme Court in the original jurisdiction case of New Jersey v. New York ,523 U.S. 767 (1998),and also as a member of the White House Council on Small Business.
From August 2008 to August 2009,Verkuil was acting dean of the University of Miami School of Law. [4]
In 2009,Verkuil was nominated by President Barack Obama to be head of the Administrative Conference of the United States. [5] The Senate confirmed his nomination on March 3,2010,and he was the Chair until October 1,2015..
Verkuil is coauthor of Administrative Law and Process (5th ed. 2009) and Regulation and Deregulation (2nd ed. 2004) and Outsourcing Sovereignty:How Privatization of Government Functions Threatens Democracy And What We Can Do About It (Cambridge University Press,2007). He has been the editor of Virginia Law Review ,and the recipient of the NYU Founders Day Award for "Consistent evidence of outstanding scholarship."
He is married to Judith Rodin,the former president of the Rockefeller Foundation.
The College of William &Mary in Virginia,is a public research university in Williamsburg,Virginia. Founded in 1693 under a royal charter issued by King William III and Queen Mary II,it is the second-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and the ninth-oldest in the English-speaking world. Edward Hirsch Levi was an American legal scholar and academic. He served as dean of the University of Chicago Law School from 1950 to 1962,president of the University of Chicago from 1968 to 1975,and then as United States Attorney General in the Ford Administration. Levi is regularly cited as the "model of a modern attorney general",the "greatest lawyer of his time",and is credited with restoring order after Watergate. He is considered,along with Yale's Whitney Griswold,the greatest of postwar American university presidents.
The Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law is the law school of Yeshiva University in New York City. Founded in 1976 and now located on Fifth Avenue near Union Square in Lower Manhattan,the school is named for Supreme Court Justice Benjamin N. Cardozo. Cardozo graduated its first class in 1979. An LL.M. program was established in 1998. Cardozo is nondenominational and has a secular curriculum,in contrast to some of Yeshiva University's undergraduate programs. Around 320 students begin the J.D. program per year,of whom about 57% are women. In addition,there are about 60–70 LL.M. students each year.
Gene Ray Nichol,Jr. was the twenty-sixth president of the College of William &Mary in Williamsburg,Virginia,United States. He succeeded Timothy J. Sullivan and officially served from July 1,2005,to February 12,2008. It was the shortest tenure for a William &Mary president since the Civil War. During each year of his presidency,however,the college continued to break its own application records.

Judith Rodin is an American academic and philanthropist. She was the president of the Rockefeller Foundation from 2005 until 2017. From 1994 to 2004,Rodin served as the 7th president of the University of Pennsylvania,and the first permanent female president of an Ivy League university.

Walter Taylor Reveley III is an American legal scholar and former lawyer. He served as the twenty-seventh president of the College of William &Mary. Formerly Dean of its law school from August 1998 to February 2008,Reveley was appointed interim president of William &Mary on February 12,2008,following Gene Nichol's resignation earlier that day,and was elected the university's 27th president by the Board of Visitors on September 5,2008. While president,Reveley continued his service as the John Stewart Bryan Professor of Jurisprudence at the law school.
William &Mary Law School,formally the Marshall-Wythe School of Law,is the law school of the College of William &Mary,a public research university in Williamsburg,Virginia. It is the oldest extant law school in the United States,having been founded in 1779 at the urging of alumnus Thomas Jefferson. As of 2023,it has an enrollment of 606 full-time students seeking a Juris Doctor (J.D.) or a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in the American Legal System,a two or three semester program for lawyers trained outside the United States.
William Mitchell was a lawyer and judge notable for his work in Minnesota as a member of the 3rd Minnesota District Court and Minnesota Supreme Court. He was also the first dean of the St. Paul College of Law,later renamed in his honor as the William Mitchell College of Law.
Robert Eric Wone was an American lawyer who was murdered in the Washington,D.C.,home of a college friend,Joseph Price,in August 2006. Wone was living in suburban Oakton,Virginia,but had been working as general counsel at Radio Free Asia in downtown Washington. He had stayed the night at the home of friends located about one mile from his office. According to police affidavits,Wone was believed to have been "restrained,incapacitated,and sexually assaulted" before his death. The residents of the home –Price,Victor Zaborsky and Dylan Ward –contended that the murder was committed by an intruder unknown to them;the trial judge found this unbelievable. Wone's official cause of death was attributed to knife wounds.
William Cleveland Mims is a former senior justice on the Supreme Court of Virginia,United States. He is a former member of the Virginia General Assembly and Attorney General of Virginia. He is the second person in Virginia history to serve in these three offices. He presently is a lecturer and director of the pre-law program at Christopher Newport University.
Alvin Duke Chandler was the twenty-first president of the College of William &Mary,serving from 1951 to 1960. He also served as the chancellor of The Colleges of William &Mary from 1960 to 1962;after that system was disbanded,he served as Chancellor of the College from 1962 to 1974. Prior to his career at the College of William &Mary,Chandler served in the United States Navy,eventually reaching the rank of vice-admiral. His father,Julian Alvin Carroll Chandler,also served as president of the College of William &Mary. His personal papers as well as the papers from his time as president can be found in the Special Collections Research Center at the College of William &Mary.
